connecting ecu software to computer

I've connected up the ecu to an old desktop computer which has a serial port,I also made up an extension serial cable as the race approved one was too short to reach.
Computer up and running with software loaded ecu connected, the computer says ecu not connected, which I understand as the ignition was off, switches the ignition on, and the software on the computer starts working I start the engine and figures start moving as one would expect.
So I keep the engine running to make myself familiar with the data, checking RPM, water, oil temps etc.
The air temp on the computer reads 31 degrees whereas the dash readout says 17 degrees,so there's obviously a fault somewhere.
Then the computer says ecu not connected. what!
In the winter when the temperatures were at zero, the engine would start first time, the revs had to be kept to about 1100rpm on the throttle, or the engine would stall and once it stalled there was no way it would start again, like as if it was flooding, now would this be because the ecu sees the air temp at 30 degrees?

the ECU redaing for water temp may be different as i think its a diff sensor, which is in a different location.
I could be wrong, but i think the tuscan has a gauge sensor and an ECU sensor.
A for it losing connection, im not sure about that fault, but maybe if its revved too high it loses signal, some diags machines are like this but not sure of the TVR software so dont take my word for it.

The air temp on the laptop is the intake air temperature (inside the airbox) and 31 sounds normal if the car is up to temp and is idling. The air temp on your dash pod is outside air temperature so are totally different.
As for the sofware dropping out, mine occasionally does this but tends to reconnect and be fine, you just click reconnect to ecu in one of the top drop down menu's.
If the car is stalling when cold, it could probably do with having the throttles balence and a general tune up. When was the last time it was done?

I had another go connecting the ecu software, booted the computer, ign on,started the engine,it worked ok again, so I was watching for about 3 minutes the computer said that it had lost it's connection, again. So I left the engine running and shut down and reconnected the software on the computer,it run for longer but I didn't time it.
On both occassions the engine speed didn't exceed 1500 rpm
I bought the car last December and it had just been serviced, I've done about 1500 miles
