Disconnecting the battery - alarm problems

The fuse from the battery to the built in charger has completely corroded meaning that when I plugged the charger in all last winter it wasn't aactually charging - surprising that the battery didn't die.
Anyway whilst trying to fit a new fuse tonight I disconnected the live feed to the battery, on reconnecting it the alarm activated. No problem I thought I'll just switch it off using the fob, not so simple. The alarm went nuts for about 10 minutes sounding for approx 30 secs then stopping for 10 secs and then starting again. Nothing I did would stop it - key fob, connecting or disconnecting the battery worked. Finally it seemed to have had enough and it's now stopped so I'm touching nothing. Will have another go tomorrow morning when the wife and 2 little uns are out.
Can somebody explain how the alarm continued with the battery disconnected? And how I can stop it if it starts again

Yes, alarm unit has a built in battery. It's there to allow the alarm to function when a nasty little man cuts the battery lead when trying to steal it. He thinks that will stop the alarm working.

I guessed it was to do with a back up but couldn't understand why the key fob wouldn't deactivate it.
Anyway I've had another attempt today and attached the fuse. The alarm went off as expected when I reconnected the battery but a simple push of the key fob and it stopped. So the question remains, why didn't this work yesterday? Don't you love TVR's?
