High speed stability with roof off and without rear screen

Afternoon all,

Since having the geo set up a couple of months ago, the Tuscan has inspired confidence when 'making progress'. Only today was the first time I opened her up with the roof off, no rear screen and with the side windows rolled up.

I was scared sh*tless!

It was attempting to wander all over the place and certainly did not inspire confidence. As a guess the aerodynamics are totally screwed without the roof and screen. Has anyone else experienced this sort of thing?

It's a Tuscan S with Nitron shocks and eibach springs by the way.

I will not be attempting any high speed runs without the roof and screen when I drive to the south of France next month.

I do very few miles and most of these are without roof & screen. I have new Racing Red shocks and new Goodyear assym's so I can only assume that the wandering I too experience is also down to the 'revised aerodynamics'
I just make up for lack of high speed use by getting up to speed nice and quickly(usual warming up methods always adopted)

Hi Steve,

How severe do you find the wandering? I think I exasperated the situation with one hand on the steering wheel whilst going for a gear change, so perhaps slighly over correcting the steering. Even so, this does not prove an issue when in 'pursuit' mode.

I generally don't travel at high speed often, this was more a case of finding my feet with the car (going to be the first summer with it). So I'll just be cruising with the roof off in future and like you, making the most of the acceleration whilst listening to the pop bangs

Quite bad actually, this was much improved by new tyres/shox/geo but still it inspires little confidence at high speed.
However, I just love the thing to bits and have not suffered high bills (touch wood) that others have benn unlucky enough to have experienced which I am sure may help you fall out of love with some motors. I guess that anything over 100 leptons is going to loose you your licence so I am happy with accelerative driving and less top end speed. This is not to say that I don't give it it's legs on the odd occasion but I do feel that it has a mind of it's own over say 120 - certainly with the roof off.

Mine's fine. Mk 1 Tuscan S with Nitrons and full Geo and corner weighting.

Driven it in Germany many a time roof/screen on and off at an indicated 170+ mph for extended periods and it's rock solid. It feels even more stable at speed as the aero aids are are actually doing something.

It does feel planted with the roof on, so I'm not going to lose any sleep over it. May well have been a combination of my inexperience of the car and the road surface I was travelling along at the time. I might have a play with tyre pressures (toyo T1Rs by the way) and see if that makes a difference though.

what the hell you all taking about,you tvr owners.this is a super car,like a lambo,or a farrari.
what do you expect, with roof and screen off.If you driving without roof and screen, then you should crousing and with wind in your heir and posing with your shads on.If your racing or driving at high at speed, then you are making a big mistake.
