Buying advise again !!!!! cat D this time

Hi all,

Have been looking for a Tuscan for a few Months now and have recieved some good advise from this forum, I am now considering a Cat D car, I have a coupe of cars short listed, both of which offer a significant saving on non registered cars, so justify further consideration in my opinion, couple of points I need help on,

1, I am aware the car will be more difficult to resell and will not achieve a top price
2, Has anyone bought a cat D Tuscan ? if so any particular problems ?
3, How difficult will it be to insure ? will I require engineers report etc etc
4, Finally, any further advise would be greatly appreciated.

I bought a Cat D Tuscan last year. It had a low speed front end bump which cracked the front panel and the two wings - no chassis damage. It was written off by the insurers due to the cost of the paintwork. I saw the photos of before and after the repair and went ahead and bought it. I got an insurance quote from Adrian Flux which I thought was reasonable but I forgot to mention it was a Cat D so I rang them back and told them at which point the quote went up by £80. Why I don't know - you know insurance companies any chance to draw more blood.

I am not really bothered about the resale value at the moment as I intend to keep the car for a few years and remember the longer you wait the more Cat D cars there will be around due to the insurers writing off Tuscans for no good reason.

That is intreasting i have a cat D chim and have never told the insurance company as they have never asked i think flux may be at it.

Hello, We can insure most vehicles as either CAT C or CAT D. About 20 of the companies we use do this. We had probably quoted you not knowing about the CAT D with the best/cheapest price we had but they probably had a rule where we could not insure written off vehicles with them. So when we requoted it we gave you the best quote with the company that allows it.

I have been buying cat d and cat c cars for ten years. i also repair them at my bodyshop. There is definatly savings to be made and the re sale isn't that bad.

The way i look at it is you buy it cheaper so you can sell it cheaper. When you buy a cat d or c i feel you work with a blank canvas you know exactly what is wrong with the car before you go any where, no faults are masked up or covered over for the sale like with un registered cars that are looking to be sold. The last thing you want to do is to spend a load of money making a car look pretty when you are going to sell it, this is when poor repairs are carried out on the cheap.
