Hi Folks,

I've been looking at changing to a Tuscan for a while now. I love the styling of both the Mk1 and Mk2. Is there a huge difference between them? The cost of the Mk2 is putting me off a little, so if there isn't that much difference I'd go for the Mk1.

Cheers

They both brak down like any TVR will. On looks alone I would go for a Mk1.

There is a BIG difference between a MK1 and a MK2, mostly in terms of handling and build quality/engine quality. If you can afford it go for the MK2.

Or you could buy my Mk 1 4.3 smile Just had a new MOT, runs perfectly, and the last person who spent 2 hours inspecting it, told me he was a bit miffed, as he could not fault the car!

I have dropped the price as well, as my Escort needs an Engine and Gearbox before VAT goes up!

cheers

rofl What a wankel! Shouldn't you be in the Japanese Cars forum

I love your profile info - blah blah 230bhp. If I was running around with so few ponies in my daily driver let alone my weekend P&J I'd keep quiet about it

Oh and have you had any major breakdowns lately? Coil problems burning out the cats? So reliable those Jap motors... loser

Oh dear - don't you just love it when people take time to be critical yet can't spell !! rolleyes

Have you ever owned one?

Getting back on topic:

If you can afford a MK2 then push for one. I've owned 2 MK1s and have an unofficial MK3 (a MK2 with new dash and small rear spoiler). Rumoured to be better built the MK2 should give you less problems. However, a well looked after MK1 will also be just as good.

Some people don't like the front end changes to the MK2 where the cheese grater grill was removed.

Personally out of all of the dashboard layouts I prefer the latest one, i.e. the curvy convertible style. You'll be hard pushed to find one though as they only installed a handful into Targas (like mine) and obviously into the convertibles. The MK1 dash is much more pleasant on the eye than the letter box style (what were they thinking!)

Ideally you want a MK1 with the 4.3 engine upgrade or at least one with a TVR Power warranty.

Good hunting.

Thanks for that. Interesting stuff. Did you notice much difference in handling when you moved to the Mk2?

The big handling differences are:

  • mk2s moved to the T350 electric power steering set up. The mk1s have a very fast hydraulic rack (less than 2 turns lock to lock), and geometry of the steering arms isn't ideal, combining to make the car feel very nervous, but also unique - the super fast steering was something Peter Wheeler specifically wanted. The new slower setup on the mk2 makes the car feel much less nervous, and I believe they also removed a lot of the bump steer problems.
  • mk2s have more suitable factory damper and spring rates, but most mk1s should have been upgraded by now to be at least as good, if not better, assuming they've done enough miles to wear out the original dampers.
  • Late mk1s gained the same suspension mounting points as the Tamora and T350 (some time in 2003); mk2s are obviously the same; makes a minor difference I believe.
My recommendation would be to drive as many of both as you can, and buy what feels right. If you buy a mk1 there'll be plenty of cash left to get the handling spot on, and eventually rebuild to 4.3 or FFF spec; it depends how long you're planning to keep it for. Either way, you won't regret it biggrin

Good luck!
Pete

The differenes between the Mk1 and 2 are not massive. Ignoring the styling differences, the engines had a more sorted top end, but not as sorted as a recently rebuilt one. They have a slower steering rack and less agressive spring/damper rates, although they're not a patch on any car that's had a Nitron etc. upgrade.

With regards suspension mounting points being different, other than possibly the steering rack height, I'm not sure they're any different? Only the Sagaris differs in this respect. The Mk2 still has the wrong scrub radius, however this is an easy fix on the Tuscan with a couple of wheel spacers.

The Mk2 has differently presented electrics, but behind the scenes they're pretty much the same.

The Mk2's left the factory in better condition and with less niggles, however as others have said a well looked after Mk1 with a couple of choice upgrades will be as good as, if not better than a standard Mk2.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I guess I'll just try to drive a few and see. I don't think I'll be going down the Mazda route.

Just to add my piece. I have run several car dealerships including a mazda one. I have also owned several TVR's.

I can catagoricly confirm that I would not buy an RX-8 as I have seen from experience (not rumors) the faults and cost they can have.

I do however currently own two TVR's !

A quick story re. Mazdas:
Start of the year I bought a Mazda 6 as I wanted A "reliable" car as I was buying an "unreliable" TVR (apparently they brak down alot...).
After a £700 service on the late 2003 diesel Mazda (and less than 3 months ownership) can anyone guess which car's oil pump gave up the ghost and seized the engine?

Anyone? .... Anyone? ...

Mk1 all the way, a future classic for sure. The mk2 is just to tame looking and lost the class esp in the interior. Although i dont even like the look of the mk1 S either lol.

Genuine Mk1 S will always be more sought after though as they're relativley rare, as well as them being the "extreme" version of an already extreme car.
