My knob keeps falling off

As you can imagine, this is getting a bit annoying now. In as many weeks the gear stick has come loose 3 times. It's coming loose where it connects onto the actual gearbox selector stub and I don't know why? First time it came loose, no worries, take the centre console off, remove rubber gaiter, realign reverse switch lever (bit fiddly) then tighten up the grub screw....all good.

Trouble is it now keeps loosening after a few miles. The grub screw is as tight as I dare so a bit baffled as to why it now keeps loosening? Should it have threadlock on it? I'm always reluctant to use the stuff if possible for obvious reasons. Does threadock deteriorate over time?

Have you tried tightening the grub screw without the knob being fitted so that you are using all of the threads (clearing the threads)? IE make sure the screw isn't locking without actually tightening on the shaft. If this is not the case, then a small dab of threadlock should be fine, AFAIK it doesn't deteriorate with time (well time is relative after all!)

The grub screw is a bit crap, what I did was cut down a proper bolt so it can be tightened with a 10mm spanner, you can get a lot more force onto it.

I like the cut down bolt solution. What size bolt/thread did you use and did you need to use threadlock?

I think it was a M5 bolt, but cant be to sure. Whatever the grub screw is, I didn't tap it or anything, just used the existing threads. I haven't bothered with thread lock as can get it much tighter than before.

...or do what I did and put some thin double sided tape lined inside the gear knob and push down hard on the shaft from the gearbox,worked for me

Turns out it's an M6 bolt that you need.
