It turns out that whoomp is the noise that the rear screen makes as it decides to make a sharp exit on the motorway…..
After 3 years of thinking that the screen might leave me and always being careful - i.e. not driving too quickly with the windows down and the rear screen in, it finally left me at about 5 am yesterday morning at the start of a 250 mile journey….
I always thought it would go when I had the side windows lowered but in this case, everything was closed and it just upped and left. We did notice that the usual squeaks from the window stopped about 5 minutes before it made its exit which in hindsight was a warning. It looks as though the clip had worked loose on one side.
Managed to time the journey to drop in at TVR Power on the way home who sorted us out with a replacement less than 3 hours after it went which was nice.
At least now I have the larger mk II screen which should be a bit better at staying in place.
I guess the moral is check the fit of the screen and your clips..

Shame yours happened at night. You missed the spectacle of watching in your rear view mirror as it tumbled gracefully through the air, turning end over end, glinting in the sunlight before landing edge on and shattering into half a dozen pieces.
I could tell that the drivers of the cars behind me were impressed too.

I guess I missed the full spectacle, but I did just see it perform a couple of somersaults as it disappeared into the blackness.
I did make it worse by taking the next junction exit and making a 10 ish mile detour to get back to the place it left me to slow to a crawl and see it sat at the side of the road in at least 3 pieces.
I wanted to believe that it had survived and was ready to make the mrs go and fetch it by getting out on the motorway in the dark.... it was probably best that it had smashed itself up...

Get the polished alloy screen clips from Raceproved - - mine have now been tested to hold (roof off) at 140mph on the Mulsanne in July!!I did make it worse by taking the next junction exit and making a 10 ish mile detour to get back to the place it left me to slow to a crawl and see it sat at the side of the road in at least 3 pieces.

Completely forgot to remove the rear screen during the "parade laps" (read: welly laps) during the
Le Mans Classic. Easy to fit - and obviously fit for purpose!

Same happened to me recently

Driving on mway and stupidly wound the windows down as it was hot (doh). Heard the whoomp sound and glanced in my rear view only to see my rear screen flying majestically off on a holiday of it's own. It was about 11am ish so luckily no one else was hit (it disappeared into the field). Unfortunately, there was no hard shoulder so I couldn't stop. I ended up stopping at the petrol station 1-200yards further up and then realising that I couldn't walk that distance back down an mway with no hard shoulder.
On the way back later that evening, no sign of the screen anywhere

Mind you, good job this appears to be such a common occurence as it was fairly straight forward to source a mkII replacement

I'm considering buying the stainless steel clips for £71 now or not (although it turns out one of the original rubber clips was loose - new window appears more secure once I'd tightened that up).
On a side note, it was quite pleasant driving back on the mway at night in summer with no rear screen... We weren't cold at all with the heater on medium...

How id the gap between the boot and window, Ionce tried a later screen with a mk1 boot but had to take a slice from the leading eadge of the boot.
At least it was only the window that you lost,ive know roofs go and even lost a boot during heavy works traffic, didnt know it had gone till i got to my destination.had vissions of it embedded in a car windscreen
