I had the same problem and it was the slave cylinder, on the Tuscan they have to take the gearbox out to get to it so unfortunately not a small job! I was relieved of 2k when I did mine but I also replaced the clutch and flywheel when it was done as they were on their last legs anyway.

probably not what you wanted to hear...........sorry.

My clutch lost it's fluid at BNG in Sept. Luckilliy Track V Road were there. Diagnosis was slave cylinder seals gone, fluid all over floor under car. Result, new slave cylinder, and complete clutch as gear box has to be removed to fix slave cylinder. Clutch probably had enough for 5000mls+ but after 30000 mls it was due anyway.

Forgot to mention £1200 was bill total. Give Richard at Track V Road a call. He's a top guy and will talk you through all options even though you don't use him. If distance is a problem they do collection as well. 0845 0945 350. He maintains our Bright Red Tuscan.

Oil on the floor coming from the bell housing
cant remember who but there are modified slave cylinders out there,

not a hard DIY job about on par with a sierra. 3 hrs?
Any backstreet garage should be able to remove box and change slave cyl, Simples
shouldn't be more than £100 labour
Worth checking clutch plate while box is off and changing box oil

Doubt you'll get away with topping up, the tolerance between the slave cyl and piston is bad and it courses the piston to twist and take the edge off the square section o ring seals,
When its gone its gone !!

Why are you suprised? These are well known, well documented and common problems with early Tuscans.

you just got to look at the pages of posts, vast majority are negative. verry verry few posative posts on this and other TVR forums.
However TVRs do make a nice garden orneyment.
A warm garage and a tinkering intrest are an advantage, and a few bob for a rainy day.
On the pluss side they can be sorted cheap and do give miles of smiles for your dosh.

Cheap.
performance.
reliability.
You can only have a combination of any 2

Colin mine went on the French/Spanish border thats grief. While its out do the clutch as well you should at least be in for some trouble free motoring then. I used Guglielmi motorsport at Daventry just shy of £1000 & top job get it done then you can start to enjoy it

You can buy uprated slave cylinders which should give trouble free running for a long time. You could rebuild the slave with new seals but won't last that long as where the seals have gone there will be scoring.

The engine rebuild issue is well known and well documented as is the slave cylinder and limited lifespan of original clutch due to weak finger design. You take all this into account when buying a car hence why you check service history and see if things like these have been done yet and take into consideration with the mileage whether you will need to do it in the next year or two.

I recently had my clutch replaced with an uprated unit and RaceProved slave cylinder and it was a little under £1200.

Sounds like you've had a bad year with mechanical issues but once they're all done it should be as trouble free as possible.

Yes before I purchased found the car had an engine rebuild in 2006 and a very good service history about a month after purchase had a bad rattling from the engine turned out to be a sheared head bolt, bolt still in the head, head of bolt in sump so not the usual documented problem just bloody unlucky

A very constructive, supportive post Dave.

How much? eek

I've just removed a perfectly good clutch from mine (upgrade) and replaced the master cylinder for a lot less than that.

Which reminds me, must pop an ad for them in Classifieds.

Yeah, It sounds alot but thinking about it that 2k covered:
Service
Slave cylinder
Clutch
New fly wheel
new tie rod as old one was bent,
I suppose the clutch replacement on its own would have been about £1200, a bit misleading, sorry
