I would say as ideal a first car as any. If the one you have an eye on is a well cared for example then go for it. Cheap to Insure and once you've got a year or two claim free No claims bonus (NCB), move on to something better if you so chose and have more reasonable Insurance premiums too..
My son passed his test @ 17 and drove a Rover Metro 1.1C ( C = carb Basic car ) got a few years NCB then moved onto a Group 17 car ( Rover 620ti ) when he was 20 paying much less for Insurance than on the 1.1C.....
. Now 24, he still has the little Metro bought new in the family in 1993. However, it's his track plaything now having fitted a 1.8 VVC k-series engine to it...
