as you all know i am in the process of giving my jago a (army look) face lift.

i painted the metal bull bars, side steps, tow bar and wheels in camouflage, using ordinary spray paints from halfords. after much toil, the painted parts now look really nice.

q1)

my question is this if i want to paint the rest of the fiberglass body in the same colour, will i have any probs? i have read through the tech details on the site about painting. but i could noy get an answer to this.

the original colour of my jago is British racing green. the paint work is really good as it is now, with no cracks etc..

if i paint "millitary" green over this, will it stick? any potential probs with doing this?

q2)
my second prob is....being on the taller side, i find my gear stick is rather short for me, when in the driving position. is there any other long gear sticks that you think my fit a mk1 escort gear box?

or do i have to weld a piece of rod to the current stick and extend it?

cheers

(ok drseg i have fulfilled my promise, now get my converted brake rod ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

We have used the Jelonite "Repaint" type of paint before (Panther being one example) and touch wood the primer from the same manufacturer seems to do the job.

On the whole what you really need is a primer that will bond to the gel coat surface. There are proper etching primers for the job but not sure on prices. Another possible paint/supply is somewhere that does boats as quite a few of those use fibreglass hulls so need painting.

Regards the gear stick the best option is a piece of aluminium tubing that can be internally threaded to screw on to the gear stick and then can take an external thread at the other end for the gear knob. That way it does not put too much extra weight onto the stick which can be known to cause the gears to jump out when driving along. Naturally extending the stick will increase the throw of the lever so may cause bruised knuckles.

if this is the case then.....ie., etching primer or undercoat suitable for boats......can good old Dulux be applied on top then please?
How the paint is applied can be compressor/air gun or good old Woollies paint brush......but, what about the Earlex Electric Spray Gun.....cost about £70 ish. May be worth a thought. According to Earlex, it will spray etching primer (suitably thinned) and a variety of other types of paints.

Hi gopen as far as I am aware the correct etching primer for fibreglass not only bonds to the gelcoat (suitable rubbed down of course) but acts as a barrier/sealant so allowing painting by various paints such as cellulose, coach paints etc.
Of course the best way of being 100% is to consult with the supplier of the paint & primer prior to purchase.

If you are after some Nato green (Infra Red Reflective), www.anchorsupplies.com list it under vehicles. It does stick to fibreglass as it is self etching, needs no primer and looks the dogs danglies. As you may have guessed, my Jago is of the lean, mean, military look. (Ie green, green, green.)

Hiya,

I have used Hempel yacht primer and paints, can be got from any good chandlers.

Primer should be fine with any enamel paint, but not cellulose or similar.

Good luck

Yes you can paint it red but the enemy will spot it quicker!!!!!!!!!!

I think it should be yellow, and er - powered by steam. Then the steam clouds stop the enemy seeing it.
