Completed rebuild of crash damaged Geep today - fitting out next, seats and carpets.
Just the usual gremlins come to haunt me, after total rebuild of chassis and spring hangers at rear, new axle, springs, brake pipes and fuel tank fitted, all connected and working, start the engine and aaaaaaargh radiator is total loss, the crash impact destroyed the fan (still dont have a new one) and that in turn has ripped tow sets of holes in rad that I had not seen earlier.
So now I need a rad or advice on what other make will fit (brackets can be made) perhaps including electric fan! Yes I have noted not a lot of space, though rad could be set to one side!
Sure I am not the only one to have come across this problem, so let me know how you solved it!

Try Mk2 Escort, Cortina, take old one to Motor Factors, new Cortina rad was about £30 a year ago from Camberley Auto factors.

If you are anywhere near Alton in Hampshire I have a spare rad for sale.

If crossflow engine then Mk2 Escort Rad or Capri crossflow unit. If OHC engine then Cortina, Capri or Granada Rad.
Should still be able to either get exchange units or have a new core put into the header tanks.
Our chap at Stafford does recores or one offs.
I know that is not much use to you (unless you are in the Stafford area)but I am sure other radiator companies must do a similar service.

If you require a fixed fan (to mount on the water pump pulley) then I have recently acquired one (crossflow unit)which I am sure we could do a deal on.

Thanks for radiator advice/offer, I have been very very lucky and got a NEW escort rad for £15
Fan: YES PLEASE, will ring in next few days
I have looked at loads of electric fans and have not had room for any of them, less than 3/4" from fan hub to rad, will have to see if engine mounts damaged!

Jeep in spray shop at present, I have to complete masking up and spray/rub down primer, mate will then top-coat.

Still not found any 2nd hand seats suitable for open top use, looking for Metro or Cobra at present - any other suggestions?

Existing Red Jeep - what should the altenator output be just after starting? I'm getting 14.4V and 102Amps, yes 102Amps dropping to 1.8A after a short while - relays popping at an alarming rate.
quick fix needed (not electrically minded) MOT overdue and Tax up soon!

The average 12 volt alternator should produce between 13.7 and 14.6 volts when run at 4,000rpm with a 3 to 7 amp load applied.
Amp wise it depends on the unit and whether it has been modified (some companies offer an upgrade service to increase the output amps for high load vehicle electrics.)
Most standard alternators fitted to the Ford range of engines produce between 38 amps to about 75 amps. The crossflows have a range from 38 amps to 55 amps.
It sounds like the regulator diodes may have failed so the alternator is free to continue producing power above the level the vehicle electrics can withstand.

The only real quick fix is to put on a different alternator and have the current one checked and serviced by an agent that deals with alternators (or use it as an exchange at a motor factors).

The drop you describe could be the alternator diode switching the alternator down when it has achieved adequate charge to top the battery up after the start.If this is the case then the voltage should also drop to around 13 volts.


What does it read if you load the alternator with the vehicles electrics.(switch on high beam headlights, fog lights, heater fan,hazard flashers etc but not the wipers unless you can prevent them from rubbing on the screen)

Regards seats for running the vehicle open top vinyl seats such as those fitted to some base model cars would be best as if they get wet then at least it can be wiped off with a cloth whereas most other seats have cloth covering which would soak up the water.

Possible Mk1 or Mk2 Escort seats from the base model.
