Why don't they just banish the road fund licence and put a few pence on petrol/diesel to cover it, then the more you use your car, the more you pay in 'tax'.
Because this way they have an excuse to put GPS tracking in every car....
Thats exactly what I was thinking. However the GPS device may turn out to be faulty in a lot of cases...(remove place in microwave....2 mins full power should do it)
Hang on a mo - seems to me the media is scare mongering. :-)
Look at www.cfit.gov.uk/reports/pfru/01.htm which formed part of the Thinktank's proposals at:
www.ippr.org.uk/press/files/InthefastlaneJuly04.pdf
If you read carefully, you'll find that the press figures are overall running costs per mile for an urban cardriver - bit different from a congetsion charge of that amount
Quote
Julie Foley, an IPPR research fellow, backed a charging scheme using satellite tracking to increase the cost of driving in urban areas from 11.7p to 20.4p a kilometre. Drivers would incur higher charges for rush-hour journeys and cheaper fees for trips in rural areas.

Now look at the time scale - ten years, at best, before it can be introduced.
I wouldn't get too wound up about for now - just remember it when you next vote!

Thats the point though isn't it, we have a rise coming in September and there are moves afoot to have another protest. This is propaganda.

Yep, I was thinking this too.
Why introduce a complex system to charge for use which just happens to enable monitoring, when we already have an existing system of usage charge in (very high) fuel taxes.
There must be a motive to introduce monitoring once the trojan horse has been wheeled into place.
Are the public really so stupid? Hell I hope not.

Simple - the FTA would be up in arms. With no one paying car tax who would subsidise their industry?
Are you aware of the cost of RFL for a 38 tonner?
Well just saw our Transport Overlord on Daily Politics on BBC. Before he came on they had some graphics up on screen 'explaining' the proposed new system, apparently you'll get a monthly bill through your letterbox " like the mobile phone bill you get now" detailing where and when you traveled and how much time you spent on the road .... Now how do I explain to my wife where I was, this'll really help the divorce rate!!!!
One way to kill this would be to require all politicians to post up their bills
