Birmingham Super Prix set for 2006
Racing cars to rev through the streets of Brum
The streets of Brum will echo again to the music of high-revving racing engines. In 2006, May Bank Holiday weekend, the Birmingham Super Prix is due to be resurrected using the same circuit as the previous event, in 1990. It will coincide with the Motor Show at the NEC --which should ensure that the traffic is totally snarled.
Last time saw F3000 cars racing round the city centre and Highgate; the 2006 event is likely to be saloon cars only. It won't be a race either. Instead, the organisers say that it will be "a range of high speed displays or runs on a specially laid out circuit on the city streets (in much the same way as any other street circuit) that would offer a huge range of content."
They continue, "There would be all the visual impact and excitement of seeing exotic high performance world class cars driven at very high speed on a city street circuit, just not in competition. The lack of a competitive element however, in many ways means there will be far more scope for the drivers to "entertain" the spectators. The individual displays would be limited timewise to a relatively short duration or number of laps, before moving onto the next item in the programme in much the same way as displays at an airshow for instance. It will be short sharp non stop action and entertainment."
What happened after 1990? Over 20 cars hit speeds of up to 200mph on the 2.47 mile circuit, but it was ditched after political rows, centring mainly on the event's funding.
Thanks for Barrie Walker for the photo. More information here.
This is the best way to grow a new generation of motorsport enthusiasts, If Muhammed (sic) wont go to the mountain etc...
Lets hope there is a decent classic car race( or display) in the agenda.
What about a 'Built in Brum' race for all of those brands that have now more or less disappeared?
