If it wasn't sabotage, how the hell did a shedload of timber end up lying across a high speed line?

Police are today investigating an apparent attempt to derail a 100mph passenger train.
The eight-carriage First Great Western train heading into Paddington from Weston-super-Mare smashed into a "large quantity of wood" spread across mainline tracks at Maidenhead.
The driver saw the wood at the last minute and slammed on the brakes. The train was badly damaged but stayed on the rails. Its ruptured fuel tanks spilled 2,000 litres of diesel across the lines.
