Pay £19k now for delivery in SeptVauxhall has released a price for the fastest Astra, the VXR. The 240bhp car will sell for £18,995, and is now available to order.

From its 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, it offers 0-60mph in 6.2 seconds and a top speed of 152mph. It sits on a Lotus-tuned chassis with 321mm vented front discs to keep it in check.
Options include air conditioning, Recaro seats, 18-inch wheels, ESP and side curtain airbags as standard. Other cues include 18-inch wheels, body-coloured V-grille, side skirts, rear spoiler and revised bumper assemblies, and blue front and rear brake callipers. Nineteen inch wheels are a £500 option.
Inside, there are Recaro seats, new instruments incorporating VXR logos, a three-spoke sports steering wheel, carbon-effect inserts on the doors and facia and a new alloy gearknob, also with VXR detailing. Four colours will be available at launch – Flame Red, Arden Blue, Star Silver and Black Sapphire.
Customers will get the first cars in September.

Yes but a very cool looking, (doubtless) superbly handling Astra. I am waiting to see options list first though. Golf GTI goes up to about £24K with necessary options (inc DSG). Too much for that.
There is always an arguement for buying used prestige vs new mainstream but if you want a top handling, top looking car the S3 won't figure, nice though it is.
I know this is a little 'off topic' but are you lot still stunned by how criminally dull the new Focus is?

I too was disturbed by being drawn to the Vauxhall -side, but its a very impressive car (hopefully...).
The standard spec seems to trounce the Golf, so i can imagine it'll be a bargain choice.
Anyone know if the Panorama windscreen/roof will be available on it? Its available on all the other 3dr cars, just thinking it may not be an option due to torsional rigidity requirements on the VXR...

why won't an S3 figure?
Due to the steering wheel being connected to the front wheels by some elastic bands, as with all audis. Although it rather have that than 240bhp through the front wheels.

You mean they CONNECT the steering wheel?!?!?
I thought it just ended in some box of swarfega, or maybe treacle... S3's main assets are a big turbo and 4wd. The chassis is uninspiring, the ride is hard without being well keyed-in to the road, and the steering, as has been said, has less feel to it than Kate Moss'
Sure it's quick point-to-point, but any chav can put onto his car a big turbo, wide tyres, and stiff suspension...there is usually an art to performance cars...ask Lotus (who coincidentally tweaked the suspension here!).havoc said:

Lets face it, a good car at a decent price, will gets lots of buyers, which means that GM can get better prices for the parts, and keep the price keen, and then more buyers etc.
Plus the worlds tuning specialists KNOW how to get a reliable 375 BHP out of that engine.
I'll be sticking with my mk2 cavalier for a while yet thou !

Well I know this has since been answered but to follow this up; the S3 has superb build, great residuals and straight line performance but sports cars about styling and handling as well. It is a no-brainer if you are looking purely from a financial viewpoint but then again if you did we'd all have diesel fiesta's.
There was also mention of the Zafira VXR in this months Evo. A 240bhp 7 seat MPV that will do 0-60 in around 7 seconds and top out at 145mph. Not too shabby.
Combine that with the Astra, VX220 Turbo and the Monaro and you have a pretty decent line up. I'd go so far as to say that Vauxhall have become my favourite mainstream, regular car, brand.

Oy, I've got a diesel Fiesta! It's a fab little thing. That said, currently close to ordering a Boxster S unless I can be convinced by the "New, Reliable" TVR....
On topic, the Vauxhall does look the part - absolutely fabulous. Here's hoping that the handling matches the looks.

ad 1. Although not at Saab (until recently - 'new' 9-3 first dynamically convincing attempt since their haydays with the Classic 900 turbo's...).
ad 2. Particularly tyres. 20 year old Pug 205 GTI/ Golf Mk2 GTI/Saab 900T16S or 15 year old Corrado with current state of the art in tyres (and supension set up accordingly to make full use) = hard act to follow dynamically by todays lard-a** hot hatches.
ad 3. If initial reports on the Astra VXR are something to go by (and given Lotus' involvement, there could be something in it) you patently don't want an S3 or 147 GTA instead - except for pose value maybe.
