Agony of attacked sergeant
by Jo Breach
Police sergeant Ruth Blincow was nursing a black eye and a broken cheek bone today after being beaten up by a suspect.
Speaking at her Sussex home, the 39-year-old officer said she thought her attacker would "smash my skull in".
Surrounded by flowers and get-well cards, Sgt Blincow was in pain and can only nibble at food.
She said: "I now know what the term punched senseless means."
Sgt Blincow was challenging a suspect after reports of a man trying car doors in Bolney Avenue, Peacehaven, at 5pm on Sunday.
The suspect was unco-operative and Sgt Blincow was radioing for assistance when he "went berserk".
"He punched me straight in the mouth, knocking me backwards."
Sgt Blincow was repeatedly punched, sending her on to the bonnet of a parked car.
A windscreen wiper snapped off as she slid to the ground. She managed to radio a "ten-20" urgent help message as the punches rained in.
The man fled when a member of the public and other officers intervened.
Two women residents in the street brought her ice packs for her face until an ambulance arrived.
Miss Blincow was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, and later allowed home.
She said: "The man who helped me didn't think the offender was going to stop punching me. I want to thank him and everyone else who helped me."
Fully trained in the use of a police baton, Sgt Blincow said she had no chance to draw it: "It happened so quickly."
Sgt Blincow, who has served with Sussex Police for 17 years and is currently stationed at Lewes, is off work and may have to undergo surgery to repair her cheek bone.
But she said: "The way I feel at the moment, it won't stop me continuing as a police officer."
A man was arrested later on Sunday and was expected to be sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

Just highlights the danger officers face on the job.
I know we all whine and moan about the police from time to time (indeed many of us, me included, have had cause to take serious issue with them) but this kind of attack is absolutely unacceptable.
I hope they throw the book at the nasty cowardly little thug. Better still 15 ninutes alone in a cell with a couple of large (male) police sergeants would save the taxpayer the cost of a trial and ensure matey boy thinks twice before raising his hands to a woman again in future.

I'm a believer in do unto others. He did it to someone else, so it seems only fair to treat him to some of his own.
British prisons are overcrowded as it is, and in Mr Archer's case seem a bit soft, softening this guys face up a touch may be the only way to get through to him

this seems like another case of 'care in the comunity' going wrong, known mental timebombs allowed to roam the streets with the police powerless to do anything till it's too late.....sounds like the wpc came close to being another statistic (not attempting to be mentalist you understand)
let me get this right.
Bloke trying to steal cars, gets confronted by a policewoman, thinks I can give her a good kickin and get away with it.
Why is it that every time a crime is committed we have to have some sort of physcological review of the accussed.
Dont sound like a nutter to me, rather a chancer who thought he could get away with it.
Just lock em up and throw away the Key

Would this assailant have been so successful if the initial approach by the WPC in question had been backed up, not necessarily by another officer but rather, the business end of a tiny lead projectile dispensation implement?
Who really cares if bone heads like this end up entertaining the worms instead of Big Frank in D Section?

This mental health act stuff is not helpful. This guy made a cold decison to put the wpc out out of action and leg it. That is the action of a crude and sadistic thug not someone who is mentally ill. Somewhere, someone is not doing their job properly.

By the sounds of it she should have drawn the baton while radioing for assistance if she guaged the situation worthy of assistance. Although it could have been viewed as an agressive stance, but I think the police should be able to defend themselves in this sort of situation.
I hope the lady in question is ok

Well said. The barsteward had enough wits about him to use this method of escape. He deserves to 'fall down the station steps' a time or two.
quote:
Perhaps we are being prepped for the next brainwash mantra "All crime is the work of the mentally ill"
Promptly followed by the mantra that all mental illness stems from the genetic make up of the individual and is therefore natural.
Thus to imprison criminals would be to discriminate against someone because of their genetic predisposition, and as such illegal.
So that would mean that the assault was all the WPC's fault cos she provoked the bloke with her insensitive, fascist police tactics.
Oh Lord, what are we coming to? :sigh:

Which could work in our favour as we could show that we are geneticaly predisposed to travel faster than the average numpty, hence exempt from speed limits
