Mrs Dan bought this to my attention.

quote:

Police form 'frying squad' to catch fuel tax cheats

A special police unit nicknamed the "frying squad" has been formed in a Welsh town where hundreds of drivers are believed to be running their diesel cars on cooking oil.

According to the Guardian, highway patrols in Llanelli have already arrested several dozen offenders, whose cars give off unusually fragrant exhaust fumes.

They were trying to save more than 40p a litre by putting oil from the kitchen cupboard into their engine.

The Guardian says the Asda supermarket in Llanelli has slapped a ration on cooking oil sales, after internal auditors found that it was selling far more than any other outlet in the country.

Customs investigators are also involved in the "sniff patrols", which home in on any car smelling like a mobile fish and chip shop.

Bill O'Leary, spokesman for customs and excise, told the paper: "It's a serious offence. By law, all cars on public roads must pay a tax on the fuel they use. Evasion carries a maximum seven-year jail term."

Dyfed Powys police said they were working with customs on a stop-and-check basis because of the problem in Llanelli.

While Asda has limited cooking oil sales per customer, an AA spokeswoman told the Guardian that fry-driving "could severely damage your vehicle. You should always follow the manufacturer's instructions about which fuel to use".

Nice one! I wonder who thought of using cooking oil first? - I mean it's consistency is completely different from diesel. And why did Asda notify the customs & excise? - I would have thought they should have just upped their stock
Seven years for not paying tax - shame they don't seem to have as strict laws for car theft & mugging....

Is this really true???
Hang on, they weren't using "fuel" i.e. petrol or diesel. What bit of the law says you have to pay tax on fuel - any fuel? What happens once you have a working water-based engine? Are they going to slap 60p a litre of tax on water?

You can bet they'll find a way - "conversion" charge or some such nonsense.

err... no. You are supposed to pay the 60% (or whatever it is) fuel tax and THEN pay the VAT on the gross amount.

Obviously

Yeah, but VAT is still a tax... sounds like one of those loopholes in the law to me...

You see, this is what winds me up about all this vegetablist moaning about fossil fuels running out...

Cars can be run on vegetable matter, so why the hell not do it..

As for Customs & Excise, well they're another self perpetuating bunch of burocrats, who are supposedly public servants yet think themselves our masters..

It's time we took back the tax raising powers in this country and gave the entire civil service machinery the solid pounding it needs to put it back in its place..

It doesn't help that a lot of the best people today wouldn't want to work in the Civil Service, leaving it to all the old duffers who've been there for 30 years and who have "it's always been done this way" syndrome, and the one's who like the power of a traffic warden, but not the exposure to the public.

The best reason to use vegetable oil to power your car is to make sure there's enough petrol available to torch these fcukers

I feel better now

Yeah but, Podie mate... this is exactly how the petrol price is made up 15p fuel + 32p fuel tax = 47p + 17.5%VAT on the whole lot! You are paying VAT on the tax you have already paid!!

But I guess you know that and I'm just going off on one again

This practice of running diesel cars on veggie oil is actually allowed in Germany. They even encourage it I beleive. I think they are allowed not to pay any extra tax once they have bought the oil from the supermarket.

It should be the same way here too. The only reason there is such a heavy handed clampdown is because the government/customs and excise don't want people finding out that they can all of a sudden opt out of paying 80p a litre at the pump and use veggie oil instead.

If it were allowed then you can bet your arse that BLiar and Co wold find a way to tax it.

Seven years for this hienious crime of trying to be environmentally friendly
Although I doubt the villagers were really all that concerned about the environment as much as their wallets

If I had an old diesel crap mobile then I wouldn't hesitate to convert it to veggie oil. Just make sure your the only one in the locale doing it though or else Asda might become suss and grass you in

My dads next door neighbour has been using cookin oil for about 2 years now. It needs a slight engine modification thats simple then your away.

All this bull about it affectin your engine is rubbish. Just another conspiracy by the big corporate boys and the Govt to rob us of our hard earned cash.

Must admit walking out to the smell of a chip shop every day has done nothing for his diet!!!!!

Question is should I (chip) Shop him

They'll probably dye the water and make it illegal to use common tap water. If your found running a car on "PURE" water you get fined. If your using dyed water, no problem, apart from the 60p a litre tax...
