Book by Bulgin
A book commemorating the best writing of the late Russell Bulgin will go on sale at this year’s Motor Show.
Bulgin died, aged 43, in May from lymphatic cancer.
The 128-page book, called ‘ The Very Best of Russell Bulgin’ and retailing at £15, contains some of Russell’s best-remembered feature stories and columns. They come from many different publications including Car Magazine, Autocar, The Daily Telegraph, Autoweek in America and Car Graphic in Japan. Stories include a memorable interview with Nigel Mansell, riding with Michael Schumacher in a Ferrari 550M, rally driving with Ayrton Senna, and a column when Russell asked car styling bosses if they would ever employ a designer who wore grey shoes.
All proceeds from the sale of the book – which will be limited to just 3,000 copies – will go towards research at The Royal Marsden Hospital, where Russell was cared for during his illness. The book’s production has been funded by the motor industry.
For those not visiting Birmingham, the book can also be purchased via the post for a total cost of £19.95. For mail order, the credit card hotline number is: 01892 838928.
I only bought the issue of Evo that commemorated Russell’s life because I had been told about the "Tuscan S to Le Mans" story. When I opened the magazine it fell open on the “definition of Evoness” article. I thought that it was odd as I’d seen it before. Only when I looked further down the page did I realise its significance.
I remember his writing from the very first issues of CAR that I ever bought. It was always his columns I’d seek out first. He was always witty, incisive and incredibly well informed about everything, not just cars.
In the end he carried himself with such dignity that only photos gave any clue as to what was really going on.
I think I speak for all of us when I heartily commend the Industry for paying homage to a man who did so much to keep them in line. He had obviously earned a great deal of respect from both sides over the years.
I really hope that the money raised will be of genuine use to cancer research, and that that may be of some comfort to his family. In particular to his wife who had to see him through his last days.
Rest in piece Sir, there are so many who feel they knew you as a friend who you will never meet…
David.
Fan-fckuing-tastic. Brilliant, passionate, articulte journalism which conveys the real feeling of any situation giving you that 'involved' feeling that most many writers cannot achieve.
The sense of humour is omnipresent and has had me pissing people off in the 1st class carriage with surreptitious chuckling in the corner.
