"Ten red-haired women between 19 and 40 years of age and ten more with dark hair were given a commonly-used inhaled anaesthetic in the study. After each dose of the anaesthetic, the women were given a standard electric shock."New Scientist Story

Just how standard are these electric shocks and can anyone get them on the NHS?!

Dunno whether you can get them now, but I got a series of electric shocks on the NHS when they were trying to work out why my hands didn't work...

(They were timing nerve impulses or summat)

They did 10 shocks, 1 sec apart for each of the levels.

They ranged from a couple of volts to test 'em in my fingers, upto 400v to test 'em in my leg.

Mind you this was 10 years ago, so with cut-backs, it's probably done with a PP3, and a couple of bits of wire now...

I didn't think to ask whether these were 'Standard' though!!

Dunno about Major Clanger's post, but mine's true...

Edited to add:

The doctors thought I had something called Guillian-Barre syndrome. (And no, that doesn't mean you turn into fancy shell shaped white/milk chocolate bars)

The electric shock thing is called a 'electromyogram' (EMG)

Details on the problem they thought I had:

www.gbs.org.uk/blue.html

though, the results from the EMG didn't match, so I didn't have what they thought!
