Select any piece of suitable tarmac and using the best possible combination of eye, foot and hand coordination, attempt the maximum velocity in the available space and time.

Every time.

Sensible policies for first thing on a Friday morn.

Speed demonstrably does not kill. Otherwise we could not have fast trains or planes.

What kills is the overriding factor in accidents - Driver Error.

Put up a GATSO and you only "protect" a short distance of road - and this is debateable.

Train a driver - and you protect the whole road system.

Done. I thought the above was simple enough for journos to understand - anything more complicated and I doubt they could retain concentration to the end of it without an autocue.

Exactly - the amount of training is directly proportional to the skill of the driver (obviously), and lowering accident rates will be similarly proportional. It comes down to the willingness of drivers to take interest and pride in their driving, which is always the stumbling block.

Spot on. It irritates the hell out of me that there is never any mention by our 'government' of educating drivers. Always, it seems, we all have to be dragged down to the same level as the numpties and treated like children.

Idiots who never indicate, but who drive well within the speed limit, are classed as safer than someone like me, who likes to get on with it but keeps their eyes peeled.

Could rant for a couple of paragraphs, sadly have work to do.
