I read the title as a thousand million.

It seemed unlikely but a million doesn't sound enough.

Think I'm more triggered by the number of zeros in the title than JLRs downplaying of how much an issue theft is for their cars, brand and reputation.

The reputational loss alone should warrant a larger investment than £1m, surely.

Should be making the car harder to nab in the first place instead of propping up the police. Need to throw more money than that if they want to see any real difference.

Having seen the build “quality” of my partners less than three year old Evoke i am never going to buy a JLR.

Nice looking cars, terrible otherwise.

That should be a JLR tagline; ‘Looks great, but you’d never want to own one….’

In all fairness, I've never known a person to own a JLR product and not have either issues with build, reliability or theft.

Its always put me off, but my bro-in-law managed to negotiate an insanely good deal on a Range Rover however could not get a decent insurance quote. It was cheap enough that even I considered snapping up the bargain given that my bro-in-law had done all the leg work. But low and behold, cheapest quote came out at £4k.

How did we get here!

And on a side note, it feels like they've just spent £1m on bad press. It'll make nearly F-all difference to the number of thefts to their cars.

£1m? What about the design security weakness?

Can't see how the police can stop someone stealing a car, in fact I'd say it's impossible. All they can do is react to a theft that's occurred.

More than any other competitor, JLR have now designed out the security weaknesses. This can be seen by the reducing insurance premiums. To some extent it's a cat and mouse game though, as criminals really want these cars.

I suspect this £1m pounds is a lot about getting in the news to remind people of the effort they're going to.

Surely by announcing that you have given £1m to the police "to support police operations in theft hotspots, as well as to fund intelligence gathering" then you are just reminding people that your cars ARE being stolen.

If they had announced that they were NOT giving £1m to the police as there is no need to because the increased security in their cars meant they were not being stolen, then that might have been good PR.

Create an environment whereby stealing a car is a very risky activity due to strong likelihood of being caught and imprisoned.

My understanding is that the main issue wasn't that JLR were significantly worse than other manufacturers on security.
Its that they were average while being significantly more valuble vehicles.

So the necessary equipment for relay attacks etc could be used to steal a £100k LR or a £25k average car with pretty much the same penalty for both; guess which one is getting stolen...

Of course £1m is pocket change. Wouldn't suprise me if, once you include training + equipment a police officer costs 100k/year. Do we really think 10 extra police officers country wide are going to make a measurable difference to car theft... I suspect if you wanted to reduce it, £1m/year per major UK port to track stolen cars being shipped abroad would make a difference...

I’m on a Lexus forum and they seem to think per cars sold vs stolen, Lexus is actually the worst for thefts. One guy had his same ES stolen three times in 9 months. God knows what they were doing with it that meant he kept getting it back though. They can be unlocked and started by going through the wheel arch into the headlight.

Land Rover definitely suffer from desirability.

Prevention is better than cure, etc... Visible police force, bobbies on the beat.

This falls on the justice system as a whole, tough penalties for those caught stealing cars (or anything else), create an environment where stealing a car is risky and the likelihood of being caught is high.

I’ve owned 5 over the last 20 years and never had one stolen nor had an issue with reliability nor build quality, my insurance this year on 4.4 SDV8 vogue is approx £500pa. How many have you owned?

Warranty Wise say the Range Rover is the most unreliable car.

That is statistically valid.

Your experience, although interesting, is not statistically valid as to the reliability of range rovers as a marque.

An evoque is a land rover in name only. Terrible cars, built by pissheads and drugtakers. And yes i am a scouser and yes I know ppl who work at halewood. Dont confuse that level of build quality with the other desirable high end cars, its like comparing chalk and cheese
