Renault reheats the Mégane

It's the old 'win on Sunday, sell on Monday' trick

Win on Sunday, sell on Monday. It's one of the car makers' oldest sales ploys so it's no surprise to see Renault's blue and yellow-liveried F1 team being used as a sales tool for its latest hot hatch.

The new Mégane Renaultsport 225 Renault F1 Team special edition arrives in UK showrooms this week, coinciding with victory in Bahrain for Renault's F1 team with Fernando Alonso at the wheel.

It's plastered in the Renault F1 Team graphics including the F1 logo and metallic blue paint. Each car has its own numbered plaque and includes amongst its standard features the Cup chassis (see review here on PistonHeads), large black gloss 18-inch alloy wheels that are 1.5kg lighter than Mégane Renaultsport 225 and half an inch wider, plus Recaro seats in blue/ black cloth.

Oily bits are uprated too, with re-tuned front and rear damper settings, uprated front and rear spring rates (25 per cent front and 77 per cent rear), de-connectable ESP for track days, revised stiffened electrically assisted power steering and Brembo front brake callipers and increased brake master cylinder diameter are all standard on the F1 Team car, along with climate control.

The new car costs £19,500.

It's a tad too far for Renault to claim, as it does, that the new car "provides the thrill of driving on the road that the R26 race car does on the track" -- and it's a shame for Renault that it doesn't have a true sports car to reflect its F1 glory...

Yes, I assume Alonso is about to pull sharply in front and flash on and off his high intensity rear fog like to make the driver aware he is driving illegally...

It is a shame that the best Renault can pimp to capitalise on its F1 success is an aging family hatchback with wide tyres and a wider a*se than J'Lo. They need to bring out a new proper sports car like the old Spider (with a windscreen and roof this time!) with a fancy 2.4 V8 and really watch the punters come running.

In my opinion of course.

They've got a 3.0 V6 engine sat around not doing anything sporty anymore (previously used in the Clio V6, now ferrying people around in Laguna's)

Apparently when questioned about the lack of a new V6 to go with the new Clio, they said they have exciting developments on the way to replace it. Maybe something based on the 350Z would be likely, as Renault and Nissan have a share agreement anyway.

Doesn't matter what you call 'em; if they are below the miniumum height for headlamps, they can only be used in conditions of reduced visibility.

As an aside, I have never found any conditions where the fog lights on my car have improved visibility. If it's THAT foggy, then they don't actually help.

Isn't the car on a track pedants?

From the light reflection on the tyre i would guess that it was darker than the picture suggests so the safest thing to do on a track would be to make yourself as visible as possible!

Indeed it is, and by the looks of those blue lines i would say at Paul Ricard. Good thing they shot it from the front. That Megane rear doesn't get any easier on the eye with time and familiarity...

Daytime lights are on for other traffic and pedestrians visibility sake, not yours. That said, the lights on that megane look too bright to be considered Daytime lights, which are now on many US cars, and aren't meant to glare you.

My 205XS had 'driving lights' below the bumper line. I gather 'driving lights' are any type of separate main beam unit. Those on the Megane are fog lights and nothing else.
