Muppet Plates

What tenuous excuse can you find to buy a crap number plate?

At first glance it looks easy to decipher why Stuart Dormer chose the DVLA 03 Select Registration SD03 DAD – it represents his initials SD and that he’s a DAD …but no… Stuart chose this catchy number plate as a quirky way to advertise his driving school – Dormer’s Approved Driving.

Stuart from Stirling, who has just qualified as an approved driving instructor, is awaiting delivery of his new dual control Renault Clio. In the meantime, his sons encouraged him to consider a 03 personalised number, which went on sale in November 2002, to add a touch of individuality to his learner driver car. Currently, Stuart has seven students on his books, all of whom think the personalised registration is a great idea.

Stuart explained: "Learner drivers these days opt for distinctive schools when choosing who to learn to drive with – they want to drive good looking cars, so I thought a distinguishing personalised registration would be perfect to help me stand out from the crowd. The number I chose is novel and catchy so I hope people will recognise and remember it, helping to attract more students to my Driving School."

"Distinguished personalised registrations" "Good looking cars" That's what a modified Ka (yes, a Ka)-owning friend of mine says about his 'pride and joy'. The guy in the photo needs TWA 7 S, surely.

People in the company I work for want "status" titles. Although they are not Directors they want to be called Associate Directors....

...then they want seniority to be noted so they call themselves Senior Associate Directors.

Right!!!

Hmmm, my missus bought me A W02LEY for a wedding pressie (she got diamonds) as my name is A WORLEY. Does this now mean I'm a tosser?

All I need is a new car to bloody put it on (newest car missed qualifying date by 1 month, why didn't she say something?)

I saw a Golf GTi one lunchtime with the registration 12NOB

As if that wasn't bad enough, there were 2 little apostrophy-type marks between the 2 and the N.......

Not half as true as a Maxed 205 I once saw. Not only was it a 5-door, but the 'GTI' letters (non-standard) were in the wrong order: Peugeot 205 GIT, I kid you not.

Well I think if it's done tastefully, it looks good and is a much better way of personalising you car than putting silly blue lights on the screenwash jets...

So these plates cost money and don't enhance the performance of the car in any way. At all.

Every personalised plate I see reads "1 H4V3 M0R3 MON3Y TH4N 5EN5E".

I agree, especially when you have to space them illegally to read anything anyway. I really laugh at all these ads for number plates where the sad gits selling them need to put the real word in brackets so that you know what it is spelling. If they need to put it in brackets then the plate does not spell that word and IMHO is totally worthless. I would probably spend up to £500 for KEV1N but no doubt somebody wants many £K for it.

In Hungary you can choose your number plate 3 letters 3 numbers, 4 letters 2 numbers or 5 letters 1 number. Price is fixed for the combination eg 3+3 is about £130, 4+2 is about £200 and 5+1 is about £280. When I get a wedge I fancy TVR450 or whatever it is.

Well my private plate is now worth more than double what I paid for it 5 years ago, unlike my shares in RR which are worth less than half what I paid for them Nice investment if you ask me, must admit some really are pants though, followed a Pug 405 into work with W4 EAT on it, s'pose it was meant to read WHEAT (????) but with the tow bar in the way looked more like WE EAT, didn't see if the driver was a lardy though
Personally for businesses I think it's a good way to opt out of buying a new fleet of vehicles every year or so, every noticed how many coaches have private plates so you can't judge how old there are

Bought the wife a scenic just before Christmas and got the plate DL 52 LSL (mine and her initials). Was it worth it? - No! Funny but it seemed a good idea at the time.

I always find it amazing that people spend so much money on silly versions of these new plates. You can buy good old plates for not a lot of money and they are so much better. Last year I bought LSF 672 to put on my wife's car for £600, privately. I will be worth this all day long and probably more in time. Where is the market for most of the modern stuff. Having said that a big car group near us (Eastern/Western) have the plates EA52ERN and WE52ERN - I can just about see that one !!
SD03DAD - what an arse - if I got a car with this on it by bad luck I would pay to get rid of it !

I bought KFV 24S, WDP 47S and WDP 58S for £99 each 2 years ago. I hav'n't 'modified' the front plates, but it would be interesting in the congestion zone.

I just think these people want the attention that more unique cars give without the cost, which makes it even sadder. E.g. The bloke over the road from me has an Ultima. Who'll care what the number plate is on that. I'm just looking at the car!! Hamanah Hamanah!!!

Why do I keep reading "SAD DAD" when I scroll past that blokes number? I'm sure that's what many people will see (or think)
