How do they mean lost? The first physical plate is lost or they don't have a record of who it was sold to, wasn't it for sale a few years ago in the times, don't the DVLA have a record of all the reg plates & owners?

DVLA will have details of either the last registered owner if the plate was on a vehicle. Or if not on a vehicle they'd have details of whose name was on the retention certificate.

I thought that if it was not assigned to a car then you had to pay a retention fee ever 12 months?

If no fee then it reverts back to the DVLA.

If we all fly past a couple of cameras with A1 plates on, I guess they will find it quick enough ;-)

I have seen H1 and D1 on cars around Guildford.

Unbelievable! A registration can't be lost. Like below, if it was zapped by a camera the plod would soon find it's owner via DVLA. If they don't have a record then it must be available again?

I thought that one was on a car in the museum at Tatten Hall. Anyone been there recently?

I last saw plate at BTR plc headquarters now merged as Invensys plc at BTR House, Victoria, SW1 at which point they owned the Dunlop marque, that was about 3 years ago, at that time it was regularly "loaned" to Rover [now BMW?] for publicity purposes in exchange for new loaned car. I belive they valued it around £300K at the time, but best place to start looking!
