Road tax (VED) increases - April 2025
Discussion
2025 VED changes. What about existing cars?
Is the increase dramatic or will it only go up by factor of RPI? Say, £35 rises by RPI to £36.75?
There are different vehicle classes/categories of course so best distinguish between low emissions cars, 2001-2017 and post 2017 cars.
Thanks in advance!

Please help. I’m confused.
I’m looking to buy an 8.5 Golf R, if I buy a new one and it’s delivered after the 1st of April, what VED will be applied?
The discounted price will be around £45k but the list around £52k
Well depending on the emissions, the first year will be either £2190 or £3300, then it drops to £195 thereafter plus the over £40k supplement for an additional 5 years.I’m looking to buy an 8.5 Golf R, if I buy a new one and it’s delivered after the 1st of April, what VED will be applied?
The discounted price will be around £45k but the list around £52k

First year (184gCO2/km)= £1095
years 2-6 will be £190 standard plus £410 premium car tax = £600
Years 7+ = £190
These numbers will be subject to annual inflationary type increases.

But I’m guessing it’ll be included in the OTR price quoted anyway?

This is where I’m getting confused, I thought £1095, but Parker’s are quoting £2190?

Likely you signed up with the current road tax pricing, any increases will be on you.But I’m guessing it’ll be included in the OTR price quoted anyway?
I guess dealers will pre register anything they have in stock?
Depending on the options fitted which will affect the emissions, you'll pay either £2190 or £3300 on the first years VED.
If the car arrives before the 1st April, then ask the dealership to tax it and then collect after the 1st April. If the car arrives in the UK, the dealership will receive the vehicle documents and then car register the car before it becomes physical stock.

ive got an old petrol x5 from 2002 -- looks like this will be a 700+ tax rate... which is frankly ridiculous for the meagre mileage it does as a third car!
Anyway... quick query... I'm currently taxed on DD till the end of the year. If I SORN now and retax, will I get the current rates till end march 26?

The cost for mine has doubled in the time I’ve owned it. I think my next car will just be a 1 litre Fiesta at this rate.

I've looked up a couple of similar cars on auto trader and it gives ved at 415 with co2 at 356? the tables would suggest this should be 735?

The asterisk in the table against band K (£415) suggests it applies to vehicles over 225g CO2/km but registered before 23rd Mar 2006 so would include yours.I've looked up a couple of similar cars on auto trader and it gives ved at 415 with co2 at 356? the tables would suggest this should be 735?
It doesn't say if it is going up from 1st April though, looks like that's the current pricing.
