My speed six has sat for a few years due to illness. She was running when she went to bed but now wont start. The initial problem (or so I thought) was a broken fuel pump. I replaced this and found that some fuel hoses needed replacing to stop the petrol mist now occurring. I added petrol and tried to start. No good so I changed the plugs ( the old ones were in a terrible state ). Now she is trying to start but not managing. As I turn it over there is compression and popping from the exhaust and the occasional backfire of flames out the air intakes. Any ideas would be welcomed please.

You say 'sat for a few years'. Old petrol turns to varnish and has probably gunked up your injectors. I'd suggest removing them and getting them cleaned. I had mine cleaned after sitting wet during a long rebuild and it made a huge difference. Also - flames out the intake is never a good sign. Again, I had similar when I bought my car in '05. Turned out to be blocked cats. The chap I used at the time cut the guts out of them effectively decating the pipes. If you can, take the cats out and try and fire the engine with just the headers attached. That will eliminate any doubts as to blocked exhaust.

Good luck.

The car has been stored indoors and was running fine when put there. My thought was injectors next.
