Has anyone seen it before? I've got one that was new a few years back that caused me a lot of problems, this one looks a bit different.

How true is that it was just a Nissan starter? I'm sure I'd posts on here over the years saying it wasn't true & the Nissan one didn't fit.

From that listing if sounds like they are just selling an OEM Nissan starter.

The guy who posted the link says he has one fitted & it works fine though.

The WASP would seem to be very good but it is expensive....

Nissan maxima 3.0 auto. Fitted many back in the days when you couldn't Tilton. Low power motors though so good to get you out of trouble but might not last long.

I was wondering if getting an original starter reconditioned would be better than buying one of those, I guess it would!

I had a new one that was a nightmare, I sent it off to London Essex Auto (who I think you have found to be good) they said it was fine on the bench. However I tried it on two different Cerbs, it only engaged some of the time. APM Andy thought the body may have been the issue with those. The body on that ebay link one looks different. The chap on FB said his from that link had been fine when getting a rebuilt Cerb running. That was when I found the issues with my problem one, with the many starts you end up doing.

When I was looking (about a year ago) it seemed getting clutches for rebuilding them was the main problem, London Essex Auto told me the pinion gears were no longer available. If the Nissan maxima 3.0 auto has the same clutch / pinion then they must be available somewhere....

Mine was gone. frown Turning itself but not the flywheel. Obviously the internal clutch was gone. Repair not possible due to missing parts (at least here in Germany). But the guy there confirmed it's from Nissan Maxima 3l V6, type JE30, built 88-94.
So as long as your starter looks like this it's the Nissan thing:




After some investigation I found some more part numbers which (I think) were not mentioned here before:
Nissan 23300-85E00
Bosch 0986 020 801

Nothing available in new (except the very expensive WOSP startersredface) so I decided to try a used starter from a wrecker for small money (70 ). Installed yesterday and it works fine. smile

And btw: My old starter wasn't an original as well.

Changed mine last year and this is what I wrote in the P/N topic. The Nissan starter works fine and the one I replaced was the same which lasted at least the last 10 years I own this car. And it is cheap.
You just need to ensure that you buy the correct type.

Here's the picture of the starter in the TVR Cerbera parts catalogue - it looks the same as the Nissan one to me. I'm not sure that oversizing a starter motor has much benefit - if your car doesnt start at the cranking speed and torque from the OEM motor then its probably not the starter motor thats at fault...

If the starter fails to engage, test the solenoid

It has TWO coils (I only found out the hard way)

The first Pull coil takes a high load in order to engage the pinion with the flywheel

The second Hold coil takes over once the Pull coil has done its job, this is to release some load in order to divert it to spinning the armature

As a precaution I replaced the solenoid a few years ago, immediately before heading to the Ring for DN track days

It worked when the engine was cold, but the rest of the time it often failed to engage

Testing it off the car didn't show the problem because when off the car the Hold coil was strong enough to operate the starter

However the brand new solenoid was faulty, the Pull coil was open circuit, so when fitted to the car the starter often failed to engage

What made things worse was that eventually the starter motor solenoid failed to disengage once the engine started (probably because I had tried using a lubricant on the plunger), and the armature self destructed

Rather than have a new started shipped to me in Germany, I choose to drive home with no starter motor - I do not recommend doing that
