Front damper prices.

just finished stripping down the o/s front damper assembly, i compressed the spring and found the damper no longer damping, in other words it's had it.
Julian this was the cause of the rattle, thats been bugging me for so long..
anywho, what i want is a price, for Avo's, for the front, i will fit myself, iv'e found a website thats offering them at £98, inc. but will consider nitrons, but how much?.
one final thing, after compressing the spring i still coudn't fathom out how to remove the end cap, i tried gripping the damper shaft and turning, but it just turned round and nowt happened...
any advice will be appreciated...
also Julian if you read this, my cerb is idling to low on cold start, i have to sit with my foot on the gas otherwise it will cut..can you adjust this, or e-mail the setting and i'll upgrade the ecu myself..

Told you that's what it was.
Check the spring length and overall condition also as they have a tendency to sag and causing the damper to bottom out.Have you noticed the ride height being lower than it should be?
The alloy spring retainer slips down on the damper rod, the slot in the retainer is for sliding it from the rod.
Firstly make sure the spring is compressed enough then slide the bump rubber down and then the alloy retainer. It might need a light tap due to corrosion.
I wouldn't bother with standard stuff, i'm sure there are better dampers out there. Nitron about the best affordable and then i've seen Leda's on some Cerbs.
I spent a lot of time last spring experimenting with damper settings and spring rates as well as camber angles. My cheap AVOs have been really good and the factory gave lots of advice. I quickly learned that you should not leave the work to the shock absorbers. The real shock absorption is by the springs. I found I needed much much stiffer springs. I use stiffer damping adjustment of the AVOs on track (obviously) but three clicks less on the road. I am really pleased with the result. Car is very stable on bumpy road. On track, it corners as if on rails. I also gave the car more camber than the factory spec and made it identical from side to side. Then there is corner weighting!! This all took a lot of time. I am sorry now I did not get Joospeed to do the job; they would know all the specs without lots of experiments. My car has the high level rear anti-roll bar and this fouled the damper collet. AVO within 48 hours machined a modified version and delivered it to me - free of charge!!

That's intersting .. sounded nothng loike a damper when I drove it! lol .. sounded much more like the door release cable you thought it was before .. in fact I could have sworn it sounded much more like it was inside the o/s wing, damper rattles tend to be much heavier than the lightweight noise in your car .. oh well ..
idling from cold .. will check what the latest cold start trimming is and get back to you

i don't wish to sound unpopular here but it's a hugh misconception, that dampers are called shock absorbers, it is the job of the spring to absorb the shock, while the damper controls the preciprication of the spring, posh dampers as found on motor bikes allows for compression , and rebound as well as load all to be adjusted, to adjust the way the suspension behaves, on cars you can rearly only adjust the compression rate, the force required to push the damper through it range of movement. this is the screw found on the top of the dampers,
springs can be progressive, with the winding being closer together at the top, this allows the car to absorb the shock without having to go through the springs full range, and only when the spring is heavily loaded does the spring utilise it's full range..there are some small exceptions to this, as suspension is a very complicated arrangement..

I would have thought the spring would absorb energy and release it back equally if the damper wasn't there to restrict this.What's that Newton law i did at school. "To every action there is an equal and opposite reaction".

BlockPower has it correct, without the damper your spring would slowly return to it's original state, leaving you with a very bouncy ride!
What Blockpower is saying is, it is the spring that does the damping not the damper.
Without the damper the spring would not slowly return to its original state , rather the opposite.

No blockpower is not saying that and he and dreammachines are correct. The spring absorbs the shock and the damper speeds up it's return to it's original state by damping down the oscillations.

Agreed. It absorbs the initial shock on bump but without the damper it would bounce quickly back not in a controlled or damped way.
I think terminology has got in the way here.The spring absorbs the bump energy and the damper absorbs the oscillations or stored energy in the spring.

Only in a vacuum and with no friction, heat, deformation or any other losses, ie not in this universe.
What i was trying to say was the spring absorbs the bump energy and compresses, then it springs back to quickly losing some energy as you say as heat etc.
The damper still does the work on rebound.
