very loud rattling/something loose

Recently had a new exhaust and clutch fitted to the cerb, and now everytime i am stood still and the engine is idling, and sometimes when slowing down, there is a really loud rattling/groaning coming from what i think is the front/middle of the car but i cannot be sure. It stops once you get on the move. I'm guessings its a loose exhaust bit somewhere. From the rear the exhausts seem firmly in place, and an initial inspection underneath does not present any obvious explanation. Any idea what/where it might be?

Definately loose exhaust fitting to me, seems to be caused by the frequency of the engine revs (like in some cars windows rattle at a certain speed/engine revs). Might be only a very slight looseness.

Ramp it and check, it'll only drive you if you leave it.

Cat heat shields... and/or starter motor heat shield.
If the system was loose you'd here noise all the time... but if its only sometimes, then its definitely one of the shields... if its a rattling sound, then thats definitely pointing to the heat shields - if its a clonking noise - then its a loose exhaust system, if its a "coin in a can" type sound, then its the baffles...

I had something similar and it turned out to be one of the cats catching the chassis rail

Greg can you make the noise for us so we know what it sounds like and can pinpoint it to cat shield, exhaust or startermotor shield?

most probably your engine mounts have split. Extremely common. will hear it at tick over most but should be able to notice the difference at high revs too.

does it happen with the car in neutral with the clutch pedal up, or just with the clutch pedal down? some clutches have loose centre flywheels (they're limited on movement by locating dowels and circlips but sometimes it isn't enough) and these rattle .. no problem though just a bit annoying, no harm. or could be any number of exhaust/mount items as detailed above ..

it definitely does it in neutral and also when in gear sometimes too, and if i remember correctly with the clutch either in or out. And when i got in her the other day, it only seems to start happening when warmed up after five minites or so of driving
