Thinking about a post-Christmas, pre-New Year treat for myself in the shape of a new Alpine (with the iPod link wotsit) head unit as I thought I might be able to just slip it in.
But after recalling the mess of the wiring inside my old S3 I thought I'd better check... Did TVR fit standard ISO connectors or is the standard-fit Pioneer unit wired in as only TVR could?
I could go outside and check I guess, but I'd prefer to open a bottle as its a bit nippy outside!

I thinnk they have a 'Crossover' box which causes all sorts of problems when you wire in a new Stereo. I am sore some people here will put the record straight.
I think you can just swap it but you will not get the best out of it until you remove the TVR magic box.

Well this is a right game Tripps.... or it's really really easy - depends on what day of the week your car was built!
Yours is a later car, so you've probably got speakers in the lower part of the doors, and in the rear. Possibly you also have little tweeters higher up in the doors.... but then again maybe not....
All head units went to standard ISO connectors in about 2000/2001, but Alpine have their own system.... (typical!) Having said that, even Halfrauds stock little adaptors for a few pounds.
If you have the tweeters in the doors, and only single cone speakers in the back then yes, there will be a TVR "crossover". I use the term in it's loosest possible form! It's an RS components box, stuffed with.. erm.... RS components. Relevant capacitors and so on for each side, to make sure the tweeters get high frequencies, and the rears most of the mid - then the doors will drive full range. As I say, it depends on your particular car.
You may wish to replace this box, as he higher end Alpine units have fully configurable outputs, so you can send what frequencies you want wherever you want, but this will of course demand extra amping and so on if you really want to get into silly territory.

RED TO RED,GREEN TO GREEN,BLUE TO BITS!!
if in doubt please get a quailified electrician to tell you there is no logic to the colour coded wires as that was the only colour wire available at that time and probably the cheapest
Think I'll investigate when I have a little more time, as I've an amp and speakers to fit at some point anyway, so I might just be lazy and get the pros to do it.While sitting around yesterday had a look around and I have four speakers, two mid-range (16cm I think) on the lower doors and similar on the rear B pillars, all are Pioneer so as I'd suspected hadn't been changed.
Hopefully the head unit has the standard connections then, in which case it'll be east to change
serby - Had to shoot off yesterday but on inspection I do have the right release watsits, so will pull out the head unit sometime to see what a mess/good job TVR did when the car was made

I changed all speakers in mine today.
Took all the awful Pioneers out - there were 2 10cm units in the back and a speaker in each door, of the type with the tweeter mounted concentrically to the bass cone.
Dreadful sound.
I put a set of Focals in - they are truly marvellous speakers. A pair of full-range 10cms in the back - and believe it or not, these on their own are great - there is even some good bass, somehow!
In the doors I put a 165mm bass unit where the others were, and fitted a tweeter in each door just above the release button. The Focal crossovers fit in a handy cavity in the door panels.
Blimey they sound good! Even without an external amp (which I may fit later) and without a sub-bass unit, its fantastic sound. You can't beat good speakers; Focals are expensive but well worth it.
Any by the way, my car has an ISO connector for the radio!

1 x 165-Vslim = £251.99 inc VAT
The 100CAs are the 10cm full-range, the 165 Vslim are the 165mm component system.
I got the slim ones because I was worried about clearance behind the panel, the standard Focals are quite deep and the magnets are large. Got caught by that in previous car, a Prelude.
