Buy cheap, sell later and upgrade?

I didnt ask this in my origional post as it was long and drively enough, but how many folk here bought a cheap cerbera becuase they couldnt wait to get behind the wheel, with the intention or idea to "upgrade" to a newer one (perhaps one more in line with their ideal spec) 12-18 months down the line?
i think Gcerbera did i think.
He started with a 96 4.2 then he had that lovley 98 4.5

I did just this.
Bought a 1996 4.2 to see how the family would get on with it and to test
the financial minefield.
I drove over a landmine as I left the forecourt, but I didn't look back and
as everyone loved it so much, we upgraded to a near perfect 1998 4.5 with
full bells and whistles just 7 months later.

Glad im not alone, owning my own business, the wait for a nicer newer cerb could be 2 months or 10, its hard to tell. Couldnt help feel impatient for wanting to buy one under budget but sooner.

Surely not a reference to speed, or power?
The early 4.2 was like a rocket from a standing start, far more 'twitchy',
but also very basic inside and mechanically less sound.
The later 4.5 had less of a kick in the back 0-60 but took off at that point
and out pulled a few other 4.2's up to about 120 when things would even out.
Inside, it was much more plush and early teething problems had been ironed out.
A good analogy would be the 96 was like a stripped out 98 ready for the race track
and less of a touring sports car.

What are your comments on the suitability of a 4.2 for town driving. 90% of my driving is down town, just running about - only head out of town on the weekends. That said, most of my fun is had at 30-40 mph.

They do need a good run though to get the best out of them (and I don't mean speed)
so you'd need to make sure you stretched it's legs every few days.
TVR claimed the Speed Six to be a better 'town' Cerbera, so have you thought
about that option?

How much of a run do they need, and how much do they not like town-only driving?
re: the speed 6, my personal preferance is to steer clear. Great engine, but not for me. There is more to it than just avoidance due to fear of it needing a rebuild - Id prefer an AJP V8

I did just that. I looked a three cerberas and missed out on them. The fourth I just passed over the money with out even driving it myself. I got a cheap 97 4.2 with 23K on the clock. On the way home it had a miss fire, £1000.00 service and it runs like a dream. The deal with the wife was to keep it a year and sell it on and by a proper family car. I'm now going to keep it a year and buy a newer one.
