A bit overzealous with the mobil 1 and have gone a few cm over the high mark on the dipstick. She's running like a dream but am I likely to be in for probs?

I don't think so. I did a similar thing a while back. It was right up the dipstick, well above full and I thought about draining a bit.....until I went on the Woldz Wazz 2 about 3 weeks ago. After spending several hours on the road with my foot mushed into the carpet I checked the oil the following day and it was back to the correct level.

Therefore my only suggestion would be to go and cane it for a while!

Enjoy...

You shouldn't really overfill with oil. What damage it can do, I dont know. It was mentioned in a previous thread, but it was a long time ago. Sorry I cant be more specific.

You can overfill a dry-sump AJP V8 by at least 2 litres without any problems at all, so I can't imagine a few centimetres will hurt a normal Cerb engine.

Cheers lads,
When this rain clears up will obviously have to burn about a bit more to get those levels back down

Dry sump system works differently, the oil is kept outside the engine and force fed in and out... so extra oil doesnt make any difference to how the system operates apart from having more reserve oil to play with.

the wet sump system with the external pump works differently obviously by holding the oil in an oil pan under the crank, I've seen the insides and the engine is designed against having more than max oil. There are scrapers are already there to keep the counterweights free from oil lashing... too much oil and when run hard, can cause some nasty side effects... too many to go into... but its always better to be slightly over than under.... but dont overdo it!!!

Oh and I'll also recommend you do an oil change as often as you can afford to! You have a shite every day right? makes you feel better right? car needs the same... hehe, obviously not everyday though!

I remember reading an article years ago in an american car mag where they did do this test. they started 2 quarts (litre) low and went to 2 quarts over monitoring the oil pressure up to about 6500 rpm. 2 quarts low - 1 over, the pressure was fine, granted the car was not being driven. the scary part was at 2 over where at 3000 rpm the oil pressure dropped very quickly to zero. the crank thrashing in the oil forced air into it basically turning it into a lot of bubbles which isn't easy for the oil pump to use.

can someone please just confirm the correct technic for checking the oil on the car, i.e. how long should it be warm for, how long at rest before checking. also does anyone else find that there is tube always getting in the way of the dip stick itself and it needs to be moved out of the way when sliding the dipstick back in?

thanks in advance, probably such a trivial question but one that i want to ensure I am getting right.

Mine (4.2) is left overnight, with the dipstick out, and checked when cold. Should check it cold, as it has a wet sump. S6 are dry sump.

so it is wet sump then! really I thought it was dry sump. This makes things a lot more straight forward.

Thankyou for clearing that up.

Can someone 100% confirm that the AJP V8 (4.2) is a wet sump engine. Thanks in advance.

You dont believe me.

4.2 - wet sump
4.5 - wet sump
S6 - dry sump

You can dry sump it for £1000.

Dry sumping also means that you can create a vacuum in the crankcase if your engine sealing is adequate enough for it.

This then reduces pumping losses due to a reduction in air flow as the pistons move up and down and therefore can release more power.

take a look for yourself... a dry sump engine will have a pump on the ouside of the sump with oil lines running into the sump and back to the oil tank. the pump is usually belt driven from the crank shaft. a wet sump engine will not have this.

perfect, thankyou.

Sorry for any doubt. Having not had the car long (october) I just want to make sure I am doing everything right. Every little knock or squeek I have been calling the garage about but as I am rapidly learning these things are the things that give the car the character.

Sorry for being a pain and thankyou for your advice Kojak
