Alternator/regulator, seperate or combined?
Discussion
After my joyious contributions over the last few months it looks like it's now my turn!!!
My regulator is stuffed, it's charging my battery at 16V.
Are they a combined alternator/regulator unit, i.e. I need a new alternator. Or can the regulator be bought seperately and fitted by me.
Answers on a postcard please.
Cheers

What give you the clue that there was something wrong?
I'd like to know the signs just in case!

Was driving along and my window went up on its own. Thought nothing of it at first but then I heard a beeping and noticed the MIL light flashing irregularly and the door lock button flashing (the middle one inside). I thought I had sat on the key fob at first and turned on the alarm but at idle it was ok. Above certain revs (about 2500) the MIL and door button would start flashing.
I stuck a meter on the car and at idle it's at 12.5 - 13 volts but at >2500 it's over 15 volts and up to 16.3V.
So, it is charging but it's not regulating the voltage hence the question about the seperate units or one piece. On the bike they are seperate, but I had a feeling the car would all be one piece.
