hi gang,

so, this month im running the Young Engineers for Britain Challenge (tommorows TVR mechanics)(yesterdays kwik fit rejects) and it takes place in car showrooms up and down the country. Whilst i was at a subaru dealership last week i got talking to the manager and he fell in love with my cerb. and hes made me an offer, and im wondering if it might be the kind i cant refuse. or at least, would be wise to accept.

so, he is offering to get me a brand new subaru impreza sti with all the full prodrive gubbins in the spec of my choice in return for my cerb. this would be worth 30k (though obviously it wouldnt cost him that much). my car stands me in at 27k, but i lost a truck load on the trade from my Beemer-smug-mobile, so i want to try and consider the cost to be higher to make this piece of maths work a bit better.

so, what im thinking is, i take the scooby, and immediatley sell it on as a way of generating a bit of money on top of the purchase price of my spd 6. now, in a trade situation im not sure how id fare selling a car with no miles on the clock and how much depreciation id suffer, and im guessing that if i sold private id loose a bit too, but i reckon i still stand to'make' a little money on top of my spd 6. does that sound feasible?

with this money id then buy myself another cerb, more to the spec of my choosing, and hopefully pay a few debts, bills etc with any residue.

i know, lets do some pretend maths to help. if i sold the scooby on for 28k (which seems unfair but pessimistically likely) , ill take 4-5k out of that and pay some debts etc. with the remaining 23-24k (ish) id really like to get a: V8 cerb, in black, modern headlights, as new as possible, RED or cream interior, and if possible (which i know it wont be and were only talking a few quid to get it done, but im trying to paint a mental picture of my wish list here so that you good people know what im dribbling on about) anthracite 18" spiders.oo oo and with a nice exhaust. oh yes and a leggy supermodel inside. or three.

im guessing you get the picture, so.. is such a thing possible on that kind of budget? does such a thing exist? (lets asume the EIGHT is better than SIX debate is moot here, else ill only start crying again). does anyone know of such a vehicle?

put simply then, my dilema is this: should i or shouldnt i? am i able to get a decent cerb for lower money? should i just stick with what ive got? I know that reliability issues factor in with my engine and thats an issue, i wont deny, but its not my prime motivation. and its not about speed either, cos lets face it, either model can go faster than a lummox like me can handle.

so...on the one hand, ive got a well sorted Spd 6 that im slowly falling in love with, on the other hand i could possibly get a better one in a spec and colour id prefer and pay off some monies owed.

so, really gang, what would you do?

id really appreciate your thought on this gang, as my brain is a bit locked up from thinking about it.

theres a bag of foamy shrimps in it for the person that helps out the most (for a start, my car needs cleaning...)

thanks people, i look forward to recieving your thoughts

best wishes,
Nervous.

I'd do it if I were you if simply for the fact that you're considering it.

I respect your honesty in the fact you really want the Cerb of your choice (v8 ) and seeing as you have an excellent opportunitiy to do it then it's worth a shot .

Good Cerbs can be bought for as little as £16,500 .

A V8 cerb is the way to go purely for the specialist development that is really starting to kick off on here .

My 2 pence worth. No idea what you would get for the scooby, or how easy it would be to sell.

If you have invested a fair bit of time and money (like every Cerb owner!), then I think it is better to stick with the devil you know. Unless you REALLY don't like your car spec, I don't reckon it's worth the hassle. You could end up with a Cerb with the engine and colour you prefer, but you run the risk of buying a car which you have to throw a load more dosh at. Test drives and service history don't tell the whole story for Cerbs!

I am sure none of the above makes any sense, or is of any use, but there you go.

I'll give you my story - draw your own conclusions.

I bought my dream Cerbera - Halcyon Atlantis, 4.5, butterscotch full leather, but the bloke I bought it off saw I was in love and negotiated very hard and very well. I paid a touch over the odds for the car.

My wife decided that we should sell the Cerb as our circumstances had changed, so I put it up for sale at a similar high price, not expecting it to sell - very crafty eh?

A fella came and looked at the Cerb and despite me not budging an inch on the asking price, still bought it. I thought at least I've got my money back, but there was still tears when he drove off in it.

Six months of driving around in a Rover diesel and I was gagging for another Cerb. We went off and found an excellent car for sale in HexhamHC and bought it on the spot. It had everything I wanted, cream interior, 18" spiders, private plate, sports exhaust, but was red instead of blue and was 1 year older and a 4.2. This didn't pose a problem for me as I also like red cars and I can't tell the difference between a 4.2 and a 4.5 on a normal road.

Despite buying from a dealer, I saved around £5000 which was spent on holidays and other luxuries and I still have a Cerbera.

You have the decision to make as to wether you can shift a scooby on. The bloke that bought my old Cerb has been trying to sell it for ages without so much as a sniff.

You takes your chances.

thanks chaps, both really good strong points, and im grateful for your opinions.

on the one hand, i do think its an excellent oppurtunity, but on the other hand youre right to illustrate that i may well loose just as much as id gain by buying a cerb that needs me to throw money at it. and ill never really know that till i live with it, will i? and therein of course lies the problem with hindsight: you only get it too late >aaah yes, Glasshopper, you vely wise<

its additionally difficult cos ive not had the cerb long (about a month) and its only just getting to be driving friendly weather here such that i can enjoy it and not think of it as much as a test of nerve. twas loveley today, sunnies on, windows down. plus, now after a month, im starting to hoon around with confidence and im no longer playing that 'ooo what was that noise?' game. In short, im only just starting to settle down and enoy myself. so i dont really know how much i love my car, or whether id love another more. as my dear old grandad used to say, 'oh, crap'.

im a great believer in better the devil you know (just look at the wife) but im wondering how concious i should be of the potential engine failure with my inherently weaker block.. it had a full rebuild at 15k (2k ago) but i wondering if a stronger bet might not be to jump to a stronger choice before i find out the hard way. oh dear, i have got myself into a pickle havent i? >suddenly gets hungry and goes and gets pickle<

plus, i just did a quick search and the kind of thing im looking for is about 29-30k. eek. still, only looked for 10 mins, im sure theres others, huh?

any other thoughts gang? perhaps the way to do this is to do a poll and tot up the 'fors' and 'againsts'?

thanks for taking the time folks, i do appreciate it.

With all the negative S6 talk on here (some fair some not) you'r always going to worry about the engine rebuild.

Where as the V8 Cerbs are proven long haulers with good development (ECU upgrades etc).

You know you want a V8 Cerbera and this is a good opportunity to get one .

It speaks volumes that one of the top Cerb specialists in the UK (Joospeed) won't touch S6 Cerbs .

another good point duncan, and youre right i will always worry about THAT engine failure. but, i reckon i can live with it (after all, i bought the old gal) and ive got a decent warranty (if anyone has any intel on warranties of my kind not helping, feel free NOT to share it) and the relative assurance of a recent rebuild, hopefully meaning that my lump is now up to post-problem spec (or as best as that can be said).

BUT, i totally take your point about the lack of mod'ing potential and i do respect Joos work and opinion, and this must count for something. but as seveal of you lov-er-ley people have already pointed out, even reliable things sometime go pop. for example, my last car, a brand new supposedly 'bomb proof' bmw spent nearly 2 months of its 12 month ownership back at the main dealer. but, the headmaster of a local school i do work for bought one three days after mine (2 numbers up on the numberplate) and his has never gone wrong, at all, not once. the thing is, i can hedge my bets all i want, but sometimes its as much about the luck of the draw as anything else isnt it?

dohdohdohdohdohdohdoh.

this would be heaps easier if i could 'see' a car i wanted, then the process would be linear and instant. after all, its the age old story: boy sees cerb, cerb sees boy, boy falls in love, bank manager falls off chair. aaah, they dont write em like that anymore, huh?

Nervous m8, please do not take offence I am not having a go again about S6's, this is serious.... Sell the Bloody thing and buy the best 4.2 or 4.5 you can afford...you have then made a sound investment.
The S6 is killing TVR they are getting a bad name on reliability issues.
Buy the extra 2 cyls and you have an appreciating asset.
You have the last UK non rover touched V8 produced in Britain. A classic of an engine that IS reliable providing you don't take the P*ss out of it. Warm it up and feed it and you will be returned hours of 8 cylinders of orchestra overture, and spit back not experienced before in a car under £100K.
When will tvr realise their future is to carry on producing angry V8s not hairy but fairey six cyl hair dresser's run abouts. oops sorry!
I'm not sure how much you'll loose on a Jap thing, but maybe ask if anyone wants one in their forums, and maybe ask a few dealers/specialist what they will give you for it.

Please don't take Umbridge at my S6 slurs, but deep down you know you wanna drive the most awesome looking, sounding, and handling 2 headed monster that you can for between 16-45k
and remember it not how much a Cerb costs it how well the last owner has loved and appreciated what they have.

Good Luck m8,
Cooky

thanks cooky mate, no offence taken. after all what youre saying is fact (in the most part, ive never cut hair in my life) rather than opinion, there is little option but to agree with the facts, certainly on reliability, or rather potential reliability. an d i take your point about it, in the most part, being a better engine overall. and i do love the way they sound. but my 6 sounds kinda cool too, well, until it explodes.

im really not seeing this purely as an opp to upgrade to a more hairy chested version or my cerb, its so many factors, not just that i feel puny and wee

i REALLY dont want to go down the road or 'buying into grief'. as i said, if im honest, im not worried about being competitive with V8's, certainly no more than i was concerned with competing with my neighbours when i bought my house. know what i mean?

all its gotta do is make me happy and do the job, i dont much care if it makes me seem a big girl to other people (my hair and man-breasts do that for me adequatley). i just want to do the best thing overall, and if this means i can get an equally good or slightly better car and free up some brass than that makes good sense. to buy into bigger trouble cos ive got the chance to go even more silly is something i reckon the wife would almost certainly have me killed for. and then she'd really start on me.

anyone got any other thoughts?

thanks again gang, your advice means a lot to me.

best,
N.

I have no TVR knowledge, but could probably shed a little light on the Scooby aspect of the deal for you, as I am currently considering selling my year old WRX (and have therefore been keeping an eye on prices).

If you do a national search on the Subaru website: www.subaru.co.uk/IMGGB/WWW/Subaru_co_uk.nsf/NULL/7FFB67E4FF43F7A380256E7C004CBCA2?Opendocument
You will not find a second hand (even low milage with Prodrive goodies) STi for more than about £27k tops. If you tried selling privately, or to a dealer you would probably see £1k or £2k less than that..... and all of that even assumes that someone would buy it.

Having said that, it would probably be easier to sell a new Scooby than an old TVR, but you really need to decide if you want rid of what you already have.

thats useful intel, thanks jolley (as in 'mr jolley lives next door' by any chance? blimey, thats an old reference, even for me)..

so, the thick plottens, huh? you reckon even a delivery mileage STI would be the same money? blimey, id better have a squiz at that site in the morning.

thats really useful, thanks again buddy.

Nerv,

I'm glad you read my post in the Jocular way it was written, Owning the V8 is not about owning the quickest, loudest and most modded, for me its just a considered financal investment, which will give me the most fun whilst driving. Of course even a V8 will cost money to keep in top order, but life is too short to worry about the simpler things. Any TVR is not what a Financal Professional would consider a sound investment, but what do most of them know about motoring glee and how your car makes your day.

Come on mate and join in with the 8's, you know its the best thing you can do (I feel another S6 owner leaving the darkside and entering the fold of the chosen ones here lads)

Even a S6 with the most comprehensive warranty will let you down sometime, and if not destroy any cash reserves you may have, it will balls up a much deserved holiday or other important event...its only a matter of where and when.

Good luck with whatever way you choose m8, but i hope you deceide to stay with a Cerb, as your posts are just Brill.

regards,
Cooky

thanks cooky mate, thats really good advice.im doing my best to take this all on board in as sensible way as i can. though of course, 'that feeling' in my stomach wants and probably means otherwise. oh, crap.

and thanks for saying my posts make you laugh, i actually have a team of highly trained, lowly paid wing-ed monkeys sitting in a room all day long creating witicisms for me. turns out occasionally they hit gold (or bananas in their case)

thanks shell, thats a worthwhile idea. i dont think hes offering cash tho, hes only really talking about a 'swop', as obviously thats a cash value that costs him less than actual folding.

I would tend towards doing the deal for the Subaru, if you do the maths using worst case scenario, i.e £25K for the Subaru your still in the clear ?
Live on the edge, take a chance, you own a TVR right so you are anyway,
That's what i would do today, not sure about tommorow.
