I have been watching cerb prices since about 1998 (when I was talked into a Chim rather than a Cerb by Redhill TVR).
It seems that the asking prices have recently taken on a new pattern and can often stray up towards the prices of indie dealers. Once the gap gets to only about 3K I think I might consider a dealer. This seems to be quite common now. I guess this is cos the bottom end prices are bunching up and are normally around 11 - 16K. Good 98 4.5 onwards cars seem to be 19 - 21K. But dealers have similiar cars for only a little more. Think I need to start to consider dealers or maybe go autotrader. The private prices of later lightweights then also seem good value ie gap to a 98 4.5 isnt that big. Hmmmm.
Why cant they be as easy to price as a ford focus.

Some interesting points. I've been scouring for a Cerb. Found a few, but what I have also found is private sellers, want dealer money in some instances and wont budge!! (not all)
And its like, Why am I going to pay £22K for a car private, that I can get with extras like 18" spiders, headlight upgrade and maybe a FEW more miles from a dealer with a warranty and peace of mind for similare, if not less cash?

Im now personally at the stage, where I will buy private ideally, from a realistic seller, or Im off to a dealer.

When I was selling my Griff, I priced around dealer prices and had to suck it when realism kicked in.....

Only other thing for me is, pay circa £18k for a GOOD 4.2, or pay £29k for a LW 4.5. Personally, for the fun and time, Im thinking, cheaper sorted, than big money and depreciation as I've been there.

I dont mind paying more for a car that has lots of bills and decent upgrades ie nitrons and spiders.
But there are plenty of cars out there that are pretty standard, are 98 or earlier and are over 20K. Seems excessive to me. But if people are willing to pay..........!!?
Maybe the outcome of my 'analysis' is that 98/99 4.5s are great value privately ie deprecitation proof even if bought from a dealer.
I sold my 98 4.5 (with high miles) with 18inch spiders, factory engine rebuild (cost me a small fortune), new exhaust, starter, brakes, clutch, tyres etc... All it needed to make it perfect was retrim of drivers seat and a few small scratches (plus nitrons). Sold it 2 yrs ago for about 18K (from memory). Should have kept it I guess! But it now resides in Cerbera heaven (or is it hell).

I may be dreaming, but good, well kept & maintained Cerbs seem to be at least holding their price, if not edging up! Both private and dealer.

Get it from a dealer, I did and the differential paid for itself. More importantly get a dealer who is personally committed, my one went as far as 50/50 on work, that wasn't a breakdown but needed doing to get the car to where we both thought it should be.

Hmmm, I don't think I'd be quite so prescriptive. I'd say "get the car that you want at the price that is appropriate", regardless of where it's from.
