Now won't start - what have I done?
Discussion
Finally got the fuel rail on after fitting new starter, coil packs, big fuse and Magnecors and now she won't start.
Got fuel, pumps working, can smell it and throttle bodies are wet, got spark, well on the plug I pulled and checked although it was covefed in crap and wet (serviced in November). Just getting puffs of smoke from the throttle bodies when turning over plus the occassional blow back. Re-checked leads as per diagram found on here and they tally, although they don't seem to be in the same order as before I pulled the coils.
Battery's getting low now so starter not fully engaging just loud clicking and whirring and atl belt just jogging around a quarter turn. I pressume this is becasue I haven't enough charge to fully engage the solenoid - it's on charge but is there anything obvious I can check?
In short help I've buggered my car up and I'm a clot - it's booked in at 9.00am tomorrow for a long awaited windscreen hence the panick.
Cheers
David

Leads not on in the correct firing order would be my guess then.
Get No. 1 cylinder at TDC and attach plug lead, work round the firing order from there. At worst you will be 180 degrees out - compression stroke rather than firing stroke. If that happens, move the leads as appropriate.
Phew got it started - first swapped the starter back to the old one (I'm getting quick at this) engine turns over fine but still not starting, secondly find old coils and luckily some nice person has marked the firing order on them, check against diagram and bugger me cock on the plug lead order as most of you have diagnosed, thing is I followed this
but for mine on the odd bank coil mine is 5,7,2,1 not 7,5,1,3 as per diagram - either I've got an odd one or the diagram ain't right.
Got to sort the starter out now so all in all a lot of work for almost zero result.
Thanks for the help chaps.

You have definatly got an odd one because the odd bank is called odd because it has all of the odd cylinders in it (1,3,5&7) and the even bank has the evens (2,4,6&8) so if 2 is in your odd bank then whats on your even? Are you sure that youre not running on 4 now youve fixed it? I dooo find it odd!!!!!

peninsula tvr sent me a fax which showed two different layouts and they werent specific to dates/chasis numbers etc.
Looking at the differences being described here, it seems that TVR may have swapped the LT wires over for some reason. If you use the 'wrong' HT layout (out of the two possible layouts given by TVR) then I'd expect to get a total misfire on that bank so it should be very obvious indeed.
I wouldnt have thought it mattered that much as long as the odds and evens where right, there are only two outputs from the ecu for ignition so basically all of one bank will spark at the same time, only 1 will fire though cos each cylinder will be at a different stroke(suck, squeeze, bang, blow) so alternating odd/even will give you what you need. I also notice that the injectors work the same! It does appear to be a fairly primative system very similar to what was in my Astra SRi from 1990!

I might be misunderstanding here, but are you saying the HT lead connection sequence doesnt matter as long as you have odd / even correct? surely you are going to get partial ignition if on the compression stroke i.e. a misfire?
I have had a few swaps today to try and see whats going on having changed coil pack and HT leads, tried both TVR layouts and still have a misfire. On one layout running was horrendous for me...but odd and even were definitely correct.

Are you sure about that? There should be four outputs for V8 wasted spark, and I don't think you can really get away with less than that.
Edited to add: with this layout, each coil fires two cylinders simultaneously, and it doesn't matter which of the two cylinders you connect to which side of the coil. But you do have to get the cylinders paired up correctly and connected to the right coil.

this is correct. 2 ignition drivers per coil, 2 cylinders fired together, but you have to have the correct pairs connected across the correct secondary windings for it to work.

Sorry, was going from memory(very poor one),they are paired.
