OIL, WHERE FROM

Hi all...just had my seals done as I was losing clutch fluid (gear box out etc). Drove home - 15 miles or so and noticed smoke coming from the engine and rear wheel arches. Further investigation a f*****g oil leak, not the odd drip, but like a leaky tap drip drip drip!!! Oil all over exhaust pipes and underneath the car etc. I have had a good look underneath and its not coming from the filter/oil hose and it seems to dripping from somewhere above the gear box. Any ideas whats up?

Hi there

Just done this on my car and had to refill the gearbox with oil, which is a messy job. Could be that the filler plug has not been secured properly. It is on the drivers' side of the gearbox. Maybe its just sloshing over the side.

From what you describe sounds like exactly what I had, gearbox tail shaft seal leaking, means oil drips directly on cats so oily smoke comes out of gear lever gaiter and rear driver side wheel arch, as its somehow connected to transmission tunnel!

Any pics of where the gearbox meets the engine?
The oil seems to be coming from the top of the gearbox where it meets the engine and then dripping down the rim and flowing all over the place...
Can I drive it - I suppose no but just asking!!!!!

Fuel pump is in the rear passenger side wheel arch. You are sure its oil aren't you .

Sounds like you are having a run of bad luck recently. Best bet would be to stop worrying and get it trailored to your local Indie / Dealer. They should be able to tell you straight away whether it is engine oil, gearbox oil, brake fluid or some other fluid. From there they will be able to trace to where the leak is coming from and then hopefully fix it. As you have just had some clutch related work done then this could be related, especially as you had only driven it 15 miles after collecting it. Give them a call and get it there tomorrow to get it sorted and back on the road again.

Its definitely engine oil - brown gloopy oil that repells water like, well like oil really. Its definitely coming from the top of the bellhousing and then flowing over the exhausts etc. Another symptom is that it only leaks when the engoine is running so it must be pump driven.
Any oil pipes running round the back of the engine near the top of the bell housing?

Engine oil coming from above the bellhousing... hmmm.... could be the seal gone on one of the rocker covers - have you had the valve clearances done? Or could be headgasket? That said I can't remember the exact oil path from the block to the heads, but possible. If its definitely coming from above the bellhousing it can't be the rear crankshaft seal. How about the oil pressure sensor on the top of the block, might have come loose. Just my thoughts.......
