Hi all,

Well dodged the showers today and installed Jools' Whirlwind Induction kit.

All went ok, cutting the hoses requires care, obviously if you cut one too short you're knackered!

I used a bread knife to cut them and decent scissors to trim to shape.

They are a bit of a pig to get on, but then most things on a Cerb are a bit of a pig to do, aren't they?

All done now though, looks good! Tommorrow I'll give her a burn and see how the performance has changed!

(and of course the sun came out as soon as I'd finished!)

Andy.

I've sent my new mould away for the mk2 versions which will be much easier, I can fit 8 pipes in an hour but then i have done 12 cars so far so had slifghtly more practise .. i remember the first car took ages 'cos like you i was nervous of cutting one too short lol!!

Joo, have you done a standard 4.5 yet, and if so did it need much of a remap?

(Oh and by the way 2 of the jubilee clips were 55mm, not 60, which caused me some consternation!!)

And by the way Phil, look at your screen closer - bum = B U R N !

didnt changing the lenghts of the the pipes cause differences in torque and BHP over the rev range??? Dont you run the risk of altering this to the detrement.

as for shorting to size, slip the jublie clip over the hose, tighten up a little and the cut arround the jublie clip with a stanley knife, perfect cut and trim then, obviously when they are off the car!!!

erm I will go check .. vast majority of cars are having most of the works to get as close to cyclone's car as possible, can't think there's been many std 4.5s as yet but will make sure

Yes, but(joo) you supply them at a set lenght right??? which are proven on a car Cyclones right??? so, if you supply them and a proven set length, then people buy them cut them down even further, any gains that could be had, albeit with a remap, could be a compelete pile of shite, as you have people cutting the pipes to different lenghts to fit cars, and their lenghts are not proven. Didnt you get a loos in tourque and move the BHP further up the rev range and lose some lower down BHP when you initally were working on the initial set up and lenght with cyclones car???

Do you get my point now Joo's??? Cutting them shorter than you supply them could have an adverse effect to power, rather than possitive!?!?!? Am I keeping up at the back???

Your comments to clarify the cutting shorter of the std lenght whirl wind pipes would be appreciated, even just for myself...

Thanks

you'd have a hard job maing them any shorter as teh distance from the airbox backplate to the inlet is more or less fixed give or take 5mm (ish).

a small difference in length would move the tuned length but only over a small difference.

yes the bottom end is sacrificed *all other things being equal* but a short induction kit plus remap massively outperforms the std cars everywhere.

No you are not keeping up at the back.

The lengths of the pipes are over sized, so if you order them mail order then you will need to cut them down to size. You cannot cut them shorter than the recommended length due to there being a set distance between the airbox back plate and the inlet (however this may vary from Cerb to Cerb by a +/- 5mm, which is insignificant). What Joolz could do is to post them out to the customer already cut down, but as there is a variance from Cerb to Cerb then they might be still a little too long which would result in the customer still having to cut them down. I think it's great that Track Car Solutions offer a mail order service and items such as the Whirlwind Induction Hoses are not a risky proposition to fit, even the least mechanically minded of owners out there will have no problem.

With regard to performance on a std 4.5 then I would expect to see gains above 4000rpm, this is without a remap, with a full remap you would expect to see in the region of 390bhp (ideally I would recommend a remap with the hoses as it yields a massive increase in performance). Most of the original testing was on Ceejay's car and then thereafter my car, however my car was already running an Emerald and was already producing 385-390bhp with the std pipes, when switching to the test pipes we saw an increase in bhp at the top end but the state of tune of mine was totally different from a std Cerb, with mapping it showed a considerable gain in bhp and torque almost everywhere in the range.

Two things to remember:

1)You can now buy alternative pipes (Whirlwind Pipes) to replace the original poor quality purple hoses, and these Whirlwind Pipes offer you more performance as fitted and even more performance once remapped (unlike the original purple ones), they give the customer the option.

2)They look so much better in the engine bay than the originals.

I think Alinton has done a great job fitting them and look forward to his thoughts on how the car now performs

Jules.

I think the first sentence is what I am looking for here, thanks Cyclone. So as long as any purchaser does not butcher them too short, there are gains to be had, but they are not guarenteed, nore are they say a std amount, as in, "fit them and you will get a minimum extra of 15 BHP, and with a map an extra 30bhp", it is individual for each car.

They look good and even a numpty like me can see that the standard pipes squash and deform over time which must adversely affect performance. Joolz how is your calendar lookng between the 4th - 20th August? Need to get the remap done as well.

Anyone thought of manufacturing a cover to attach to the fuel rail but go over the centre of the engine with the new whirlwind pipes.

The massey ferguson fuel rail on the Cerb offends my eye.

We Julians have a psychic link. You think you invented the whirlwind pipes when actually I was just pulling your psychic strings .

I keep meaning to ring and get my slow poke car fitted with the go faster bits but am still chasing a bizzare set of adaptives since my cam fest.

I take it there's not a lot of point in the upgrade till I think I have my car performing at its best.
