Odometer & trip meter failure

Whilst out for a play on the weekend the trip meter and main meter stopped working. It happened when it started to turn to over to 40K. I have tried reseting the trip meter but this also has stopped. Speedo works fine though. I presume there are some gears inside the speedo assembly that have stripped.

Hs anyone got any ideas how this unit works & a procedure for overhauling?

Mine did this when it hit 60k. then started working about 200 miles after!!!

Same with mine when it got to 25k, i gave it a whack (technical term)since then its been ok

There are 3 options to fix this:

1) Give the speed a whack.
2) Drive in reverse for a little bit.
3) Do nothing.

I recommend option 1 followed by option 3.

This is quite a common thing - has happened to me a few times. At best it will just restart of its own accord. At worst, you might need a new sensor - about £50 IIRC

Mine has done this a few times, mainly at 10k increments. If it doesn't fix itself, I take the speedo apart and wind the numbers round manually.

so you havent really done 110K - you have been winding on miles to pretend you have done so many without a rebuild.

Yeah, I keep clocking it forwards I'm not in Reading that much, its just the closest town. You ever go to the TVR meets at Three mile cross?

dont do TVR meets (apart from the cerb meet the other week plus a city tvr meet about 8 yrs ago) !!! I used to live in Wargrave nr Reading but I moved nearer to APM.

try thumping the clock whilst driving along, thirty or forty thumps should sort it

A calibrated whack and 200 miles has sorted out the problem. Thanks for the advice

As its such a common problem it does make you wonder about all the low mileage cerbs out there
