Loads of advice on here about what areas to look out for so search is your friend.
Chassis are a danger area so should always be inspected as best as you can for rot. Look for a good service history with a nice thick file, check for regular oil changes and that general maintenance has been kept up like waxoiling chassis. Servicing does does not need to have been main dealer, a lot of the indies come more highly recommended anyway. A lot of the cars advertised here on PH are also fairly well known on here so can come with a certain amount of provenance, ones on here will also often have been looked after by a known indie so you can find out who serviced it and speak to them directly as well regarding the car. Try not to be too picky about the spec if you can or you could be looking for years, I know wheels etc are all nice to have on there but don't let it sway you, £800-1000 later on for a set of Spiders can be small change compared to buying the wrong car. I would try to get aircon though, mine is not working at the moment and it has all but stopped me driving it on some days so I would say it is fairly neccesary - luckily most do seem to have it.
Some will say buy from a dealer and get a nice warranty, others will say save yourself some dosh buy privately and put the money towards the repair fund. Only you can decide what makes you feel comfortable. As for the 4.2, well having one myself I would say it is a fine choice, you are not paying the premium for the 4.5 and you are steering clear of the "scary6"

Don't limit yourself to looking for a Cerb "locally", be prepared to travel. I am based in SYorks also, but bought my current Cerb from a chap in Southampton. Make sure you test drive a few so that you can draw a comparison between Cerbs, be it a good or a not so good one. Don't be scared to ask questions / advice on here, if you don't ask you'll never know.

I have had a 4.2 cerb for six years and have loved every minute of it and my advise would be to forget all the pretty bits they can be done to your own taste and at any time thatyou are not going to use it say in the winter. Look at what has been mechanically done. look at the shocks at see if they have been changed because they transform the cerbs handling nitrons are about the best check to see if it is an early car if the clutch has been upgraded to a later version other wise you will need calf muscles like arnie schawer oh you know.Starter motors can sometimes be a problem so see if thats been changed.It,s a good idea to look at the chassis and check for rust and if it has been waxoiled.Alarms play up again see if that been changed.If all or some of the above has been changed then the owner would have looked after the car.
The only difference between the 4.2 and the 4.5 is top end and next the driver.

I bought my first 4.2 several weeks ago. I used a guy called Rob Ingleby. He came recommended by other Pistonheads. I gave him a spec, and budget etc and he did all the work. A very professional job and I would recommend him. His website is www.findasportscar.co.uk
