Where to go for a service?
Discussion
Hello,
Had my Cerbera for around 4 weeks now and only had to replace a starter motor so far!. I will need a service fairly soon but Im not sure where to take it this time and would like to hear your opinions on the best place to go.
I had a Chimaera for 2 years before the Cerb and used the following places with no complaints. I have decided that I will use a specialist rather than a MD for service of the Cerb.
David Batty
Offord Motor co
Hawthorns main dealer
If I had bought another rover based V8 I wouldnt be asking this question as David Batty would be servicing it. I know the AJP8 can be little more involved so I wonder if I should consider any other specialists this time?
The following places are fairly close to me:
Fernhurst
APM
Castlesport
David Batty
Offord (ish)
Thames valley racetech
If I have missed any off let me know!
I have heard good things about all of the above and Im not looking to provoke a mass naming and shaming!,just your advice on who may be most experienced with the AJP8.
Thanks,
Matt

I am sure they all come highly recommended. I use APM for my cerbera and have encouraged lots of owners to do the same.
His price, ability etc are A1.
He also wont sting you for time spent making tea, making up the hrs, adhering to the TVR book time for a job etc...
He has been working on AJP engines for as long as they have existed.

Where is APM and is there a website?
Cheers.

Here you go:
NEW INDEPENDENT Friday 30th November 2001
A new independent specialist has set up in the busy TVR territory to the south west of London/Surrey. Andy McLoughlin is formerly of Hawthorns TVR and is now in business as APM Automotive. With experience of the AJP V8's and Speed 6 engined cars Andy provides another option to the many owners in this area seeking expertise with older Cerberas. He can be contracted on 01420 473931 or 07740 723673.
Hope this helps,
Rob

SHHHHHH.. will everyone stop talking about APM.. otherwise I'll never get my car in with Andy again :P... Nah but seriously Andy is the best I've come across but book early to avoid disappointment.. His business is taking off big time which is a testamnet to what a good job he does.. He's also a really nice bloke with it...give Andy a call..
The key items for WH claims:-
i) Is the garage VAT registered (and Andy is).
ii) What relations does the garage have with WH ie I understand that a good relationship with WH helps get claims through.
I assume that Andys relations are at least as good as others. But it would be very speculative to try and use this as a decider.

I drove to Le Mans this year and had my clutch go. I rang Andy on Saturday night about 8pm and he happily took a call from a very distraught (& drunk) owner.
We thought it may be the slave cylinder but after ringing Classic Line they were not going to repair in France. There was no Eurotunnel running so they arranged a cab from le mans to CDG, flights back to Heathrow and cab at other end. They transported the car directly to Andy.
So far so good - here we go with WH I thought. Andy stripped the car and found the clutch, fly wheel and slave cylinder had all disintegrated. He rang WH and they approved the repair over the phone without examining the car which they sometimes do on large repairs. They approved everything except £11.50 for gear box oil which they said they wouldn't cover.
The car was back on the road in two weeks, better than new and fully sorted by Andy.
I didnt know that WH makes you pay the repairer and then recover the cost from WH. This took 2 weeks which wasn't bad, but I was expecting the money quicker - (I guess I should stop moaning!)
BTW the claim was £1166.92 - no small claim and they had no problem with Andy, his prices or repairs.
IMHO, I cant recommend him enough.....

I'm a bit late to this!! Maybe too late?
Steve Howard - formerly of Thames Valley Racetech, but now trading as Precision Racing and based in Hurst, near Reading. Tel no 0118 903 4909
Steve has been running Tuscan racers for years and I believe is one of the very very few people outside the factory that TVR recognise as having the expertise to work on the AJP engine and will sell AJP parts to.
He built the first AJP engined road legal Tuscan racer.
And he always has a sick Cerbera or two at the yard.
In other words he knows his AJP onions and charges VERY reasonable rates.
