Mike,
I'm no expert, but I have had some 'fun' with my clutch in the past. I was told that the black residue may be particles of rubber from the seals (from either the slave or master cylinder I'm not sure which). If the seals are breaking down then they may need replacing in the near future. I'm sure there are others on here that know more about this than I do though...come on chaps!
Cheers,
Neil

Can only echo Rockets comments I'm afraid. My clutch went at Xmas and one of the first things they checked for was rubber in the fluid. As suggested it does indicate seals breaking down. IIRC the seals are in line so you may have just had the first go and are now on the second line of defence.
hi, take off the body coloured underbonnet? that runs across under the windscreen, then on the drivers side you'll find a round plastic access panel near the brake fluid resevoir, the clutch noe is behind there.
incidentally having spoken to my local specialist about the black residue i am assured that its nothing to worry about and virtually all cerbs are like this when inspected.
