Occasionally when I go to start up I get a grinding noise from the starter instead of the usual engine start up. It's happened a few times recently.

Also I've found that if I park on a hill, with the nose facing downhill, the engine is a bitch to start. Very coughy spluttery and drops out.

Anyone else get these symptoms?

Eventually you might need a recond starter.
I wouldnt worry about it until it goes.
The hill problem sounds like a fuel pump issue?

Similar problem just before my Le Mans trip (see www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?f=6&h=0&t=42061) - the starter will eventually pack up, and I wasnt prepared to take this risk on when so got it replaced.

Not sure if you've got a warranty or not (hopefully not as they are generally a waste of time), but you will have to fight your corner with the warranty company. WH were not going to pay out until it had completly gone, and then would only recondition the unit - luckily the specialist I used fought my corner and managed to get a brand new one from TVR paid for by WH (rarer than rare things at the time).

The cost I think would have been around £517 if I had to pay, a lot lot less for a reconditioned unit. So, if youve got a warranty get your mechanic to fight your corner, if not then I'd get it reconditioned.

Cheers,

Check fuel filter behind near side rear wheel (start simple)

Can I just pop a word of warning here.

The, just keep driving it, mine does that, can sometimes be a bit of a misleader. I can't help taking a fairly active approach to my car and hate waiting for something to get better of its own accord cos I can only remember one thing that did in the last ten years of driving.

Take that starter motor out and have a look at it. Chances are its going to be something simple like a sticking clutch. Not much more to a starter motor. Sort it now and not only will you not have to listen to it slowly dying but you choose whether you want to sort it in the comfort of your own garage or by the side of the road, without the car making the decision for you.

Starter motors are still available. Curd's of Tumbridge Wells usually carry a couple of new, which they supply for about £150 +VAT.
Recon are about the same price.

Ftting is available.

Apologies for the blatant plug but they have got many a Cerb owner back on the road, so deserve the ad.

But is it the starter or a worn ring-gear? Mine does this and if I roll the car back in gear with the clutch in then let the clutch out (i.e. turning the engine slightly) it always starts. Considering the potential to press the starter button instead of the off button (surely everyones done this once?) I reckon its due to the ring-gear. Will be checking it out anyway, as the starter shouldnt really make a grinding noise?
