Help!! LOST 5th Gear
Discussion

This seems to happen on cars which the driver has been (rightly) told to put the car into 5th before engaging reverse. This does help, but any gear before reverse will also work, using other gears instead of 5th all the time might make it a bit less prone to wear.
Good luck BigBazza.

Cheers Mud, who and where are topcats?
Totally recommend them, based near Aylesbury.
Brian did my gearbox rebuild (lay and imput shafts, bearing and seals )
Call Warren and tell him Graham from TCR sent you!
(probably turn you away...
) Go create some weather...

Is it that difficult to take the gearbox out yourself?
Its a bog standard box, and a trip to a gearbox specialist is likely to be much cheaper.
Only saying this to find out if anyone has any experience as I'm thinking about doing this on my 4.5 for a 5th gear syncromesh problem.
Would be interested to know what kind of prices people have been quoted for such synchromesh issues... have a slight crunching when changing from 1st to 2nd above 5500 RPM. Was given an approximate quote of £650 from a dealer - definitely too much for now given that I rarely push the revs high enough in 1st to notice.

Walldonway, were looking at approx £1200 to take it out and do it, assuming that was the problem.
I know it's not quite the same, but once when I did a track day in the Scoob I came away with a *very* crunchy 5th gear. It would engage if you were going 60mph, but any more and there was no chance. I thought I'd shagged the gearbox
However, a quick trip to Scoobysport and some Silkolene SYN5 trans lube later and it was fine. Been fine for 60k miles since, too
If you have crunchy gears, it's worth trying some decent synthetic gear oil as it's a hell of a lot cheaper than a gearbox stripdown/rebuild. If it doesn't work, you haven't lost much.

Hi Bazza,
The Peril jumped out of 5th on the two mile straight at Bruntingthorpe
and had to have the gear box out.
We took it to C D L Racing, the Tuscan race team based at Grays in Essex and they had the circlip groove machined wider so two clips could be fitted.
Apparently that is a Tuscan race car standard modification to the T5 box used in Cerbs and Tuscans.
Cost £650. approx.
CDL did a great job and I know thay have some engineers free at the mo as they are now not going to race in Aussie land.
As a matter of interest, Ray also engages 5th before reverse!!!...
Hope this helps
