it was used to test the running gear of the slr before production, was a simple chassis that they could modify to take the engine etc.

It's the Mercedes Test Track.

I'm pretty sure that they would have just used the body over the top of their tub for the SLR.

The body would have been an unusual one ti use and easy to hack into without upsetting the structure.
