Early Cerbera cams/uprights/clutch
Discussion
I've been searching through old posts and seen that there were some problems with early Cerbs (4.2) - clutch, cams and uprights. What I haven't been able to find is info on identifying the said components or their replacements. Can anyone advise?
And were there any recalls for any of the above ?
Cheers

early cars had probs with uprights, should've all be done by now, should be a sticker on the VIN plate to confirm.
If you're unsure, the factory will know, you'll need to tell em the VIN number.
Cams weren't subject to a recall, just some owners couldn't stand the noise, mines got the early "clatter" cams, and they're no problem, and not really that noisy anyhow. Easy to tell which ones are fitted. Listen to it!!!!
As for the clutch, I'll leave that to some one else, something to do with the bell housing, not sure though.

Regarding the clutch, please see thread below, especially the bit from Joolz (Joospeed). I think this will answer what you want to know.

Cheers for that guys. I'll check for a sticker for the uprights, or call the factory.
With regards to the cams, they are pretty noisy, but I have never compared them to another Cerb so not certain. But some threads have suggested that hey can wear much quicker than later ones. Is this the case, or have some people just been unlucky?
Cheers

My 97 Cerbie has done 90k miles on its original clatter cam....
Is that the car from MADS steve? if so it's been rebuilt 40k ago, or at least that's what I was told when it was offered to me.
No it was the grey one in Coventry that was up for 13k ono. Have the history and nothing has been done to the engine apart from routine maintainance. Been serviced a lot with that mileage though
Mine did 43k before it had a problem with the original
clatter cams.

Excellent
I used to service a grey cerbie at HHC, went for 75k before needing arebuild and it was thrashed to within an inch of it's life by it's owner, a former british womens rally champion .. car was a mess but just kept going and going and going .. so much for cerbie unreliability!!

I think sometimes it can be the luck of the draw, I've had a 2000 mile Cerbera engine go and in the same breath seen a 70 000 mile one with very very few problems in it's life.
I suppose as they are hand built sometimes there can be problems, many unfortunatly down to thrashing when cold and not resting cars after long track days. I've seen new cars being driven from 9am till 5pm solid and made mental notes not to buy those ones in future !
I think in the coming years we will be greatly surprised how many miles the AJP V8 will do and after a few troublesome first years it hasn't been that bad really..

There's a pattern emerging here Joolz, of you stalking lady TVR drivers; I notice the relish with which you describe her 'thrashing' the car. Your fantasies are just too transparent! ![]()
You should ask him about the trips to pick it up and his rendezvous with the receptionists... Say no more...
Still not very clear if the engine was rebuilt or not. I have to say, I am not convinced that it was or if it was it was more of an overhaul. Either way it still shows that Cerberas can be reliable. Having Joolz signature in the service book must have increased its value even more.

No but here is the lady in question.
