Ok, don't know if you have been following my progress through first fortnight of TVR ownership which I was nervous about to start with. So she is back in her native Blackpool and being fitted with a recon gearbox, new rear oil seal, slave cylinder, new clutch and bearings oh and starter motor......so that adds up to about £1500 per week not including fuel and purchase of the car! Oh aren't we having fun, just have to break the (about that holiday you wanted to go on) news to her indoors now! Wish me luck

Sounds just like my early days.

It did improve and like others have said, hang in there
as once sorted, you won't want anything else!

Go create some weather...
It's a road legal Concorde!

Bad Luck! At least you'll know where you are with the car from here on in. Chances are the gearbox, clutch, flywheel etc will last for a while and hopefully the factory will have given it a thorough once over to avoid any more surprises!

TVR Cerbera 4.5 1998 (S)
43,000 miles. 420bhp, Starmist grey, CD, Sports exhaust, Air con, claret and cream leather interior, subwoofer, tracker, 17" alloys, new Bridgestone SO3 tyres, clutch, MOT, FTVRSH, Just had 42k service at APM, loads of receipts, may part ex. No time wasters or canvassers.
=====================================================
Bazza,
I've added the PH Ad that I think was the car you bought.
If it was, then I have 2 points ;
1. It's 'just had 42K (major ?) service at APM'. I thought Garages had to guarantee their work for a period of time ?
2. The Ad says its just had a new clutch fitted. Unless your recent gearbox fault (severely) damaged the clutch, then why 2 new clutches in a matter of weeks ? (see point 1)
3. Is the previous owner a PH'r and does he/she have any input on this situation ?
4. I know, I only said 2 points, but I'm Numerically dyslexic!

Baz - there's also a reasonably priced recon gearbox in the classifieds. Presumably you got a good deal on yours?

Great reply tonto, cheers, yes thats her, the clutch is 2/3 worn, pointless leaving it then having it let go on a crucial journey and gearbox out again! the "Just" had 42k service was in mileage terms not time so it was over 6 months ago, all of which I knew but was blinded by her beauty!! lol
Anyway I am looking on bright side, going away for a few days and yippee have to take the wifes diesel Nissan X-trail....I just hope I don;t see any Cerbies out playing while i'm away

So the clutch has 3/4 worn in less than 6 months and a few thousand miles? Surely some mistake?

I wasn't intending to imply that the seller hadn't replaced the clutch or he/she was to blame in any way. However, I would imagine that given the elapsed amount of time and the miles covered the garage that installed the clutch may be able to contribute to the replacement (perhaps it was a dodgy batch of clutches or that one wasn't fitted correctly?).

Yeah, thanks for pointing that out DJ, I had forgotten it said new clutch in the as, so I'll chase it up when I find sellers phone number....TVR seem to have given it a good going over so she "should" be right now, i'll be lighting the lanes up with tailflame before long

Bazza

did you buy the car from a guy with a garden centre/nursery just north of Watford near junction of M1 and M25? If so, I think I looked at this one before I bought mine...

cheers
sean

PS I use APM for mine, and Andy's a top bloke. Worth giving him a call as he'll probably remember the car and might be able to shed some more lght on its condition when he had it in last. He's on 07740 723673

Thanks Beemer, this guy was from near Maidstone, I rang Andy @ APM before I bought the car, he said from his recollection it was a good honest car but he had only seen it once to service it at 42k All the history for the car is at home so i'll have to wait till then to look up the clutch fitters....despite it all I love the car to bits, she is one seriously sexy animal....my Mrs asked me if I was turning into the devil, and I replied that I probably was!!

Blimey, I investigated this car as well but never got any further than e-mails between myself and the seller.

Daft as it may sound, I think she'll be a goodun when she's straight, can I ask what stopped other lookers actually buying her? I would be interested to know what I missed!

TBH £20k was too much for me for a private sale. I worked on the basis that I would have to sell my car privately rather than PX it, with the associated hassle and length of time, get a WH warranty (~£500) and an inspection, and still there would be no comeback on the seller if there was anything wrong.

I was happy with £20k from a dealer, or around £18k private and the one you've bought was just too much.

It just got better, warranty holdings say the circlip in the gearbox which caused the failure is not part of the gearbox and they won't pay....if TVR themselves can't get them to pay what chance have I got?

Yeah, i paid £19,500 plus AA inspection plus £499 for WH which now appears worthless, having said all this, TVR have said they will have the car ready for tomorrow which is incredible and a credit to the service boys at the factory
