centre speaker removal???

Has anybody taken out the centre speaker and replaced it with door mounted speakers. Do I have to cut holes or are they already there but just covered up??

I'm thinking about getting the shoddy blue cloth on the doors changed for leather and thought it might be a good time to put some new speakers in also. Then I can........

Theres not a lot of clearance for door speakers, other than the ones originally fitted. Not all upgrades will fit. This is due to the window travel. I would tend to keep the centre speaker/sub where it is. ( assuming you mean where your helmet goes )...racing helmet that is.

i mean the centre speaker at the front under the stereo (96' 4.2 cerbera)
i want to get rid of the single speaker and replace it with door speakers so that i can put a blanking across it and maybe an oil temp gauge like on a previous post.

Marks: I believe the centre speaker was a feature of early cars. Yours should have 2 full size door speakers

I never realised that there used to be one there on early cars. I always thouight that owners 'upgraded' them there. I'd suggest door speakers for mid and high frequencies, smaller ones in the rear next to each passenger, and sub in between rear seats.

My 96 has a single centre speaker, 2 tweeters in the doors and 2 midrange in the rears.

You can remove the centre speaker and re-wire to fit two door speakers, but you will need more space in the door than is currently available, or some very thin speakers...

The trim covers on the door, where the door speakers would go, are about an inch thinner than a car with speakers fitted.

Personally I am replacing the centre and rears with some higher quality speakers to see what difference that make. If it isn't sufficient then I'll start looking at fitting door speakers, but it isn't an easy job for us old-timer Cerbs.

Would it be easier to try and source a couple of later door trims from a scrappie or something which already has the holes.
I'm thinking about retrimming the cloth parts anyway so if this is easier then the retrimming shouldn't be too much more for a full door.

Depending how handy you are some door speaker builds wouldn't be to hard to make from MDF then trimmed to match

My intended, 96 4.2, has central front speaker, but can a central rear one also be fitted in the helmet space. If so how easy and has anyone got any specific recommendations?

Mines a 10 inch JL sub, and is a squeeze to get it in. I made an enclosure which fits in place of the helmet holder, covered it with some trim that the same as my existing trim, and looks good. The amp is in the boot.(Genesis profile 4)

i took out the centre speaker and fitted some 6" speakers in the doors no problem at all,they dont need to be especially thin,mine aren't.
also fitted new tweeters in the doors,DLS components fit into the original aluminium bezels.

I think I see a few winter projects coming on.
The exterior is a fair bit stone chipped but as i don't see that when I'm driving then I don't care about that. It's the interior that is my space and I'd like to get it looking good.

Out of interest, what speakers were used by TVR in say a 97 4.2. Just that my car has the 6x9 front centre speaker plus tweeters in doors with speakers too and two in the rear!

I don't know about later ones but mine is a late (november) '96 and has the centre speaker plus tweeters in the door, i think, and two in the back.
i don't have any other speakers in the door but i want to change that and get some proper sound.

i like what one of the other guys done, pictures were on here, who put an oil temp gauge and a road angel or something in the space where the centre speaker was.

was it joolz that sorted out where to put the temp sensor?
i'm toying with the idea of swapping a few gauges for racetech items.
one thought was to put the fuel gauge in between the speedo and rev counter and put racetech oil temp and combined oil press/water temp in place of that and the clock.
don't know how easy it is but i don't like the inaccuracy of my water temp. it's apparently about 12-15 degrees off and gives me a few scares in the summer months.
