Valve adjustment 12000 miles or two years?

Is the valve adjustment every 12000 miles or two years or whichever comes first? I have been told both so which one is right

I guess that if you go by the book, it'd be every 2nd service... that'd be whichever comes first out of 2 years/12,000 miles.

I checked mine at 6k and they needed adjustment. Get them checked it could save you lots of money in the long term.
