My aircon doesn't seem to be working ... press the switch and nothing, not even the blue light that is supposed to come on according to the manual.

Could it be something simple like a fuse (hopeful I know). I couldn't find any reference to a fuse in the book so any ideas gratefully recieved.

On a similar issue, my heated rear screen doesn't work either, although the red light does come on for that and the mirror heaters seem to work OK. It says the fuse is the same one as the hazards, which do work, so I guess it's not that but there seems to be a separate relay for the rear screen. Could that have gone? How would I tell and how easy is it to replace if that is the problem?

In the same boat as regards to the aircon!...my light doesnt illuminate, but im told that this a common problem, some work although it is very difficult to see it illuminated without bending your head down level with the light!....I can confirm that when i press the aircon button, i do hear something 'kick-in' under the bonnet, which i presume is the air con system, but its been too By cold lately to be bothered to run it to see if i get any colder!!
cant comment on the rear window heater, mines ok, but check that the wire at the edge of the rear-screen is connected/making a decent contact....

My air-con is fine, but the rear window doesn't work.

It was even looked at the last service and 'fixed' but it doesn't work again. The mirrors work on mine and the light comes on so I have no idea what's wrong either. Mind you I just put the windows down to hear the exhaust anyway so I just look behind me!

The aircon light is hard to see, as satman has said.

As for the heated rear window: I knocked my connector off the element when I was cleaning the back window. That was a to put back. Had to glue it with some special glass glue, and paint some liquid silver paint on to it that would allow the current to pass through.

Use a multi meter to see if you have a voltage at the rear screen window connector. As kojak says, this connector is easily knocked, so this could be your problem...Handbook says relay 8 is for the heated rear window....

Try swapping the relays round. I think 6 (horns) is the same type as no 8 (M0643).

I have the same problem with the rear screen. Both the connectors are still attached to the screen but if I put a multi-meter between the wire on the right hand connector and the element on the screen I get nothing. Everywhere else checks out and my mirrors are working. It appears to be a dry joint between the element and whatever that blob of stuff is that the wire connects to. It looks like this has been a problem on mine before as the blob seems to have been moved down a bit. Whats the best way to sort this? I was thinking maybe metalset (metal loaded conductive epoxy) but I don't know what sort of current is going through and what metalset would take? Don't really want to go at it with a soldering iron

If your connectors are still on, then all you need, is the 'heated rear screen repair kit' which I got from Halfords. Its about £7 for a little bottle, and its liquid silver...which allows the current to go through. Thats the actual name of the kit. Its no good trying to solder...it doesnt work.

Thanks for help -

Tried the aircon in the dark and, as suggested, the blue light does glow very dimly (and I can hear the relay click in). Now just need to wait for some warmer weather to see if it actually works.

Checked screen and sure enough the contact has just parted company with the element so that would explain it. I guess having a 3-year old in the back most of the time doesn't really mix well with delicate British engineering. Looks like it's off to find some special glass glue and liquid silver paint at the weekend ...

You won't need to wait for the colder weather to see if your air-con is working or not, and it should really be used all year round to keep the refrigerent in good order. About 10 mins a week is enough.

When you hit the button, there will be a slight delay, before you hear a click under the bonnet which is the compressors clutch operating, with a very slight drop in engine RPM, also one of the cooling fans will periodically operate.

If your system is depressurised i.e a leak or simply hasn't been recharged for whatever reason, then there is a switch in the compressor to stop it running, so it doesn't matter if the blue light is on or not it still won't work.

It's also good to use the A/C at this time of year as it gets rid of the moisture inside the car and helps de-mist the windows. It's not just there to cool the car.

Hope this helps

My air con stopped working at the end of the Summer. The blue light was still (dimly) glowing and you could hear the click as usual.

Turns out one of the pipes had cracked (for the second time in 2 years) which had let the gas out. Unfortunately, although the clutch mechanism is supposed to be deactivated in the event of the gas leaking out, it didn't and so the compressor kept working. With no gas in the system its like driving an engine with no oil, so it has ceased-up the motor.

Thought I'd save that particular repair bill until the weather merits a new compressor and a re-charge! All part of the fun, I tell myself.
